GULF SHORES and ORANGE BEACH, Ala., Aug. 17, 2011 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- According to data released today by Gulf Shores & Orange Beach Tourism (CVB), Alabama's white-sand beaches gathered $54.7 million in lodging revenue during June 2011. This figure represents an 8.4 percent ($4.2 million) increase over June 2007 ($50.4 million), which is the previous benchmark year. On a similar note, gross retails sales for June 2011 ($82.2 million) also saw an increase of 6.8 percent ($5.2 million) over June 2007 ($77 million).

When comparing year-to-date lodging figures, the area is currently 12.2 percent above the same period for 2007.

"This tax data confirms what our our entire island saw during the summer," said Herb Malone, president/CEO of the CVB. "These positive numbers are a return to the level of growth that was expected in 2010, and early indicators based on July occupancy reports suggest that this positive trend will continue into other summer figures."

These lodging and retail figures contribute to the income of more than 40,000 Baldwin County residents, who are employed in travel-related jobs.

July lodging and retail tax figures are expected to be released in the coming weeks.
