Howe Sound Brewing just released into the BC market a new 4Way Fruit Ale - a wheat ale brewed with four unique fruits. Inspired by an original cask brew last year at Vancouver Craft Beer Week, the fruit ale proved so popular that the Brewery had to literally "go to the market".

"We use passion fruit, mango, raspberry and pomegranate in this beer. It makes for a great aroma and flavour and it's not a sweet beer. It's brewed on the drier side, and we use a mash of about 50% white wheat and 50% barley. It's an unfiltered wheat beer, so it's cloudy in the glass, and the aroma is intense," according to Head Brewer, Franco Corno.

At 4.4% alc./vol., the ale is lower in alcohol than many beers Howe Sound is known for, like the imperial series which come in between 8% and 10% alc./vol. This is part of a recent trend in the craft brewing sector - the production of lower alcohol "session" beers that are still loaded with flavour.

"The fruit trend has been well established in the brewing industry, but what you're seeing now is craft breweries experimenting with all sorts of different fruits and combinations. The fruit beer segment isn't just a 'cherry Kriek' beer anymore. Name a fruit and it's in a beer somewhere," Corno said.

Howe Sound Brewing has been in the forefront of brewing specialty artisan beers using an innovative mix of novel and varietal ingredients. In this fruit ale, no artificial or fruit essences are used. Fruit has an unequaled characteristic as a thirst quencher with an ability to refresh during the "languishing" days of summer. The citrus and full fruit flavour along with the dryness of this ale, make it an excellent summer offering. A local ale which is artisan brewed as a "passionate ale for passionate people".

HSB 4Way Fruit Ale is available on draft at 40 locations in Vancouver and Victoria and in
1 litre bottles at private liquor stores.
