Carl Bell Joins Smith Breeden Associates


DURHAM, NC--(Marketwire - Mar 7, 2013) - Michael J. Giarla, CEO, today announced that Carl D. Bell, CFA, has returned to Smith Breeden Associates as a Principal and Senior Portfolio Manager. Smith Breeden Associates is a research-driven global institutional asset management firm.

As a senior member of the Firm's investment team, Mr. Bell will focus on the analysis and trading of structured credit, including securities backed by non-Agency residential and commercial mortgages, and consumer receivables such as credit cards and auto loans. He will also continue to serve on Smith Breeden's Board of Directors; Mr. Bell has served as an outside director since 2011.

During his 22 years managing fixed income investments, Mr. Bell has developed specialized expertise in the areas of structured credit instruments, including deep experience in high yielding distressed real estate credit.

Most recently, Mr. Bell was co-Founder of Five Ten Capital, a real estate investment management firm focused on deploying capital into distressed single-family homes through an "REO to rental" strategy. Earlier, Mr. Bell served as Managing Director and Team Leader for Structured Credit at Putnam Investments (1998-2011). Prior to that (1991-1997), he worked on a variety of portfolio management and advisory assignments and served as Director of Research at Smith Breeden Associates.

Mr. Bell holds an MBA from The Fuqua School of Business, Duke University where he was a Fuqua Scholar and received the James G. Hanes Scholarship. He earned a BS in Mathematics at Carnegie Mellon University.
