Iowa Dentist Outlines Benefits of Dental Implants

Dr. Thomas Strub Uses Dental Implants to More Effectively Help His Patients Restore Function and Aesthetics to Their Smiles

CEDAR FALLS, IA--(Marketwire - Mar 14, 2013) - Dr. Thomas Strub, a dentist in Iowa, uses a collaborative approach with his dental implant patients to achieve both their functional and aesthetic goals. Dr. Strub says his patients are continually surprised by the straightforward nature of the dental implant procedure and how dramatically the results change their lives.

According to the Iowa dentist, dental implants are quickly becoming the premiere choice for tooth replacement. In addition to stability, a major advantage of dental implants is their ability to preserve the patient's natural bone when tooth roots are lost. The implants themselves are titanium posts that fuse to the jawbone over a short period of time. A temporary crown is typically placed on the tip of the post until the implant is securely rooted and gum tissues have healed properly.

Working directly with a skilled specialist who surgically places the titanium posts, Dr. Strub performs the final construction of the restoration and places the porcelain crown onto the implant. He says the custom-designed porcelain restoration will look and function just like the patient's natural teeth.

Dental implants can also be used to stabilize dentures that do not fit properly. Using dental implants as anchor points for the denture allows the denture to "lock" into place, making it easier for patients to eat, chew, and speak. Unlike traditional dentures, implant supported dentures do not wear down the patient's bone. Because of the increased stability, Dr. Strub says patients often experience less irritation to the gum tissue and have fewer sore spots in the mouth.

At his Iowa dentistry practice, Dr. Strub says dental implant patients should schedule routine checkups much like they would for natural teeth. For dental implant patients in particular, he devotes time during each checkup to ensure that their restorative crowns are staying in place and have not become loose. He also checks to see that the bite of his patients remains correct. Depending on the patient's gum and bone health, Dr. Strub recommends his patients visit the office for checkups every three months, six months, or yearly.

Dr. Strub highlights that almost any patient who is missing a tooth or missing a group of teeth is a good candidate for dental implants. Dental implants are an investment that last a lifetime, and while the crown on the implant may eventually need to be replaced, the implant itself actually fuses to the patient's bone and is considered a permanent restoration. For patients with missing or damaged teeth, or patients who are not satisfied with their traditional dentures, Dr. Strub says dental implants can restore comfort and functionality while providing a more youthful appearance.
