Peachtree Smile Center Focuses on Oral Health during Men's Health Month

ATLANTA, June 19, 2016 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services declares that June is “Men’s Health Month”.  Oral health plays an important role in overall health. However, statistics show that the average male is less likely than a female to brush their teeth twice daily, and significantly more likely to develop periodontal disease1. Peachtree Smile Center wants to inform its patients that addressing oral health needs can prevent the development of additional health consequences associated with poor oral care.

During National Men’s Health Month, media and health education organizations work together to raise awareness that a good oral health regimen is linked to longevity. With the tendency of men to brush less than the recommended frequency, and factors such as smoking, men can expect to lose 12 teeth by the time they reach 722.The use of anti-depressants, heart or blood pressure medications can cause dry mouth, which may increase levels of bacteria that cause cavities2.

The Journal of Periodontology and the American Journal of Cardiology published a consensus report that explored a link between gum disease and coronary artery disease.  The inflammation component from gum disease could be a culprit for heart health issues. People with gum disease may be at a heightened risk for heart disease, suggesting another factor in the importance of regular visits to a dentist3.

Schedule dental visits twice a year, floss daily and brush teeth regularly to help maintain oral health. Inform the dentist of any medications or habits such as smoking, tobacco use or lifestyle. With all provided information, a dentist can help patients improve their oral health and general wellness.

“We care about the oral health needs of our patients,” said Dr. Evis Babo. “As an experienced dentist, I want my patients to understand the importance of maintaining good oral health and how specific habits and medications can place them at greater risk of certain conditions. Men are more prone to oral and throat cancers and periodontal disease. The dentists and staff at Peachtree Smile Center can help patients avoid outcomes associated with the risks of poor oral health care.”
