Matrix Surgical USA Introduces Cranioplasty Innovations at CNS 2017

ATLANTA, Oct. 10, 2017 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Matrix Surgical USA introduced patented (#US0D0794794) innovations designed to address two of the etiologies that most frequently cause cranial implant exposure at the CNS 2017 Annual Meeting. While computer designed and manufactured implants allow precise anatomic reconstruction of skull defects, they can be plagued by complications requiring implant removal.

“Cranial implant exposure is not uncommon and results in significant, avoidable patient morbidity and expense,” said Dr. Michael J. Yaremchuk, Chief of Craniofacial Surgery, Massachusetts General Hospital. Dr. Yaremchuk designed the cranioplasty innovations which are exclusively licensed to Matrix Surgical.

Affixing Cranial Implants
The plates and screws that typically affix cranial implants to the adjacent intact cranium almost inevitably have a profile above the surface of the implant/skull interface. Matrix Surgical’s new, patented lag screw design not only eliminates the problem of prominent fixation hardware, it also streamlines and simplifies the fixation process.

During the computer design process, the surgeon has the ability to select where the oblique holes are placed in the implant that allows fixation screws to remain within the surface contour of the implant.

Integrating Subcranial Drains
Decreases in brain volume following trauma or neurosurgery can lead to the creation of a space between the surface of the brain and the cranial implant. Fluid inevitably collects in this space and is susceptible to contamination and infection.

With Matrix Surgical’s patented design, a drain hole is strategically positioned in the implant to allow passage of a removable drain between the cranial cavity and the inner surface of the skull. The drain port’s dimensions can be customized to fit the surgeon’s preferred drain.
