CHICAGO, March 20, 2019 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- MC Squared Energy Services, LLC (mc2), a leading retail electricity supply company located in Chicago, recently exceeded the milestone of retiring 1,000,000 Renewable Energy Certificates (RECs)*, which represent the generation from renewable resources of over 1 billion kilowatt-hour (kWh) of green energy. mc2 offers product options that allow its residential, commercial, industrial, educational and municipal customers to do their part in helping to reduce the world’s carbon footprint. Over the past eight years, the company has collectively retired over 1.3 million RECs and surpassed the 1.3 billion-kWh threshold for voluntary green energy generation.

As part of the voluntary green energy REC retirement process, mc2 assisted seven Chicago-area communities in becoming certified EPA Green Power Partnership Communities. These municipal aggregation communities served by mc2 include Clarendon Hills, LaGrange Park, Oswego, Palos Park, South Barrington, South Elgin and Tinley Park.

mc2 hopes to surpass the 2 billion-kWh threshold for voluntary green RECs by 2020 as the demand for green options for electricity supply continues to expand. In addition, mc2 looks forward to rolling out exciting new ways for its customers to support — and benefit from — new renewable energy generation resources in Illinois.
*Each REC represents 1,000 kilowatt-hours (kWh) of energy generated from a clean, renewable source, such as wind, solar, hydro or certain types of renewable biomass. Over 95 percent of the RECs that mc2 retired were sourced from wind generation resources within the Midwest. All RECs purchased and retired by mc2 were tracked through an independent third party, the Midwest Renewable Energy Tracking System (M-RETS).
