Statement by the Honourable Bal Gosal, Minister of State (Sport), Congratulating Ryan Cochrane on Winning Canada's First Gold Medal at the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games

GLASGOW, SCOTLAND--(Marketwired - July 24, 2014) - On behalf of Prime Minister Stephen Harper, I would like to extend my most heartfelt congratulations to Ryan Cochrane on winning Canada's first gold medal at the 2014 Commonwealth Games today.

Ryan Cochrane, from Victoria, British Columbia, earned his gold medal in the 400m free swimming event on the first day of competition.

Ryan's outstanding performance reminds us that Canada is a top sport nation, and our Government is proud to support our athletes and help equip them to reach the podium at every possible opportunity.

Today, Canadians across our country are filled with pride and admiration at Ryan's incredible talent, drive and strength as we celebrate this prestigious moment in his sport career.

The Government of Canada is the single largest contributor to sport in Canada, investing nearly $200 million a year in Canada's athletes and sport organizations to provide them with the resources and tools they need to compete and win on the international stage.

I wish our Canadian team much more success as competition continues at the 20th Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.
