Cornwall Woman Pleads Guilty to Three Counts of Animal Cruelty under the Ontario SPCA Act

CORNWALL, ONTARIO--(Marketwired - July 30, 2014) - On July 22, 2014, Brenda Stang pleaded guilty to three counts of animal cruelty under the Ontario SPCA Act.

The charges included:

• Permitting an animal to be in distress
• Failing to provide adequate and appropriate veterinary medical attention
• Failing to provide care necessary for an animal's general welfare

On March 11, 2014, the Ontario SPCA received a call concerning an allegedly sick dog. An Ontario SPCA Inspector attended the owner's property and observed a husky-type dog lying inside the house door. The dog smelled strongly of urine and feces, was in very poor body condition, as well as having difficulty breathing and appearing disoriented.

The owner surrendered the dog to the Ontario SPCA and the dog was immediately taken to a veterinary hospital and examined by a veterinarian. The veterinarian reported that the dog was extremely emaciated, had very painful extremities, poor blood pressure and many other symptoms. Due to the condition it was found in, the dog was humanely euthanized under the veterinarian's recommendation.

The veterinarian also stated that it appeared the dog had been neglected for a long period of time and should have received veterinary care to address its symptoms.

The owner was sentenced to a lifetime prohibition from owning, caring for, or living with any animals. She was ordered to surrender her cat and dog to the Ontario SPCA and was placed on two years probation, during which time the Ontario SPCA can visit to her property to ensure compliance.
