OTTAWA, ONTARIO--(Marketwired - Aug. 29, 2014) - The new leader of Canada's labour movement will be in Toronto on Monday, September 1 to march in the city's Labour Day Parade and celebrate his first Labour Day as President of the Canadian Labour Congress.
Hassan Yussuff will gather with workers and their families at Nathan Phillips Square shortly before 9:00 am then join the march toward the Canadian National Exhibition.
Canadian workers have celebrated their achievements on this day since it was declared a national holiday in 1894. The focus this year is on how unions stand up for fairness on behalf of their members and how that benefits all Canadians. CLC researchers have found that on average unionized workers in the Toronto region earn $4.85 an hour more than non-union employees, a difference that puts an extra $105.7 million into the local economy every week (that's close to $5.5 billion over the year).
Yussuff says that many of the things first won by unions are enjoyed by all workers today, including fair wages, overtime pay, pensions, workplace safety standards, parental leave, vacation pay and protection from discrimination and harassment.
