Photography News: Zeiss's New Loxia Line Begins With the Release of 50mm and 35mm Manual Focus Lenses Optimized for Sony Full-Frame E-mount Cameras

NEW YORK, NY--(Marketwired - September 02, 2014) - B&H Photo would like to let photography fans know about the announcement of the Loxia 50mm f/2 Planar T* Lens and Loxia 35mm f/2 Biogon T* Lens, the first manual focus full-frame E-mount lenses within Zeiss's Loxia line. This series has been optimized for use with the digital image sensors and electronic viewfinders on the Sony a7/a7R/a7S, even utilizing an electronic interface to transmit EXIF data and allow for the automatic activation of the camera's magnifier function while focusing. Additionally, the mechanical aperture ring can be de-clicked for smooth, silent adjustment during video recording.

Based on a Planar design and incorporating six elements in four groups, the 50mm lens is a classic normal-perspective lens with minimal image distortion. It also features a minimum focus distance of 1.5', making it well suited to a wide variety of subject matter. The 35mm uses a nearly symmetrical Biogon design with 9 elements in 6 groups, including one element made from anomalous partial dispersion glass that controls distortion and ensures proper color and image field flatness. It can also focus as closely as 11.8" for attaining unique perspectives with a wide-angle field of view. Both lenses feature a fast f/2 maximum aperture, for controlled subject isolation and low-light performance, and Zeiss T* anti-reflective coatings to reduce lens flare and ghosting.

The Loxia family has an array of unifying features; one of the most important being precise manual focus control with a 180° rotation angle and engraved distance and depth-of-field scales. Both lenses are housed within all-metal barrels with lens mount gaskets to protect the camera-to-lens interface. Each lens also comes with a dedicated lens hood, a de-click key, and front and rear lens caps.
