Canon Announces the Long-Awaited 7D Mark II DSLR

Photography News: Canon's Upgraded 7D Mark II Features 20.2 Megapixels, a Faster Shooting Rate, Expanded ISO Range, Improved AF, and a Built-In GPS

NEW YORK, NY--(Marketwired - September 15, 2014) - The Canon EOS 7D Mark II DSLR camera is a much-anticipated upgrade to the successful 7D, and it has a number of improvements that are sure to make that wait worthwhile.

The most notable advancements of the Canon 7D Mark II are the 20.2MP CMOS sensor and the Dual DIGIC 6 Image Processors, up from 18.0MP and Dual DIGIC 4 of the 7D. The new processors allow for an expanded light-sensitivity range of ISO 100-16000 (expandable to 51200), compared to the 7D's range of ISO 100-6400 (expandable to 12800). The dual processors also enable the camera to continuously shoot up to 10 fps, two frames faster than the 7D, and up to 1,090 JPEG, 31 RAW, or 19 RAW+JPEG images in a single burst. Additionally, the 7D Mark II features both SD and CF card slots, providing users with versatility in choosing media and allowing for in-camera back up of images. With 65 cross-type focus points, the 7D Mark II has more focus points than any other Canon DSLR including the 1D X which has 61. The center point has improved sensitivity down to -3 EV to help focusing in low-light situations. And, a Mirror Control System utilizes mirror vibration technology to reduce vibrations to improve autofocus accuracy and provide sharp images.

Canon's Dual Pixel CMOS AF technology has been included on the 7D Mark II to provide further improvements to the autofocus functionality while shooting both stills in live view and recording video. Full HD 1080p recording at 60 fps is possible in both MOV and MP4 formats with uncompressed HDMI output available. Movie Servo AF allows for continuous focus tracking of moving subjects, and for AF speed, location, and tracking intervals to be defined. Also, the new exposure metering system uses a 150,000-pixel RGB+IR sensor for enhanced accuracy and a built-in GPS receiver provides a digital compass and records location info as EXIF data. http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1081808-REG/canon_9128b002_eos_7d_mark_ii.html

The Canon 7D Mark II features a magnesium alloy body for enhanced dust and weather resistance, and its shutter is rated up to 200,000 cycles, up from the 7D's 150,000. The camera's smudge-resistant LCD monitor also sees an improvement in resolution, going up from 920K-dots to 1,040k, for clear, bright, and sharp viewing. And, an updated Intelligent Viewfinder II provides an approximately 100% of the field of view and can display all settings superimposed over the image so you can change them without taking your eye away from the viewfinder. Another first for Canon EOS cameras is the built-in intervalometer for time-lapse shooting and long exposures without a remote control. You can take 1-99 shots at your selected intervals, and the built-in bulb timer keeps the shutter open for your designated amount of time. There is also an Anti-Flicker Shooting function reduces dark images when shooting in places with flickering light sources, and in-camera lens aberration corrections help remove image distortions.

Additional functions include multiple exposure, comparative playback, a dual-axis electronic level, PictBridge functionality, and USB 3.0 connectivity. A compatible WFT-E7A Wireless File Transmitter Version 2 is being released as well and the Canon 7D Mark II camera is also be available as a kit with an 18-135mm lens.
