291 Texas Physician Practices Recognized for Commitment to High Quality Care and Improving Outcomes

AUSTIN, TX--(Marketwired - Sep 23, 2014) - TMF Health Quality Institute, Texas Medical Association and Texas Osteopathic Medical Association announced today that 291 physician practices statewide received a Texas Physician Practice Quality Improvement Award for effectively using health information technology to educate and provide exceptional preventative services to patients.

The three organizations collaborated to develop the award in 2012 to recognize high performing practices committed to improving clinical measures including controlling high blood pressure, tobacco screening and cessation, influenza immunization and cancer screenings, among others. This award also recognizes practices using health information technology to drive high-quality preventive services, which has been designated a priority for U.S. health care by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services.

Investments in quality at the doctor's office are critical. The majority of health care in the United States is provided by physicians in the outpatient setting. For every eight individuals who are hospitalized, 217 go to a doctor's office, according to the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality.

"Quality improvement is a time-consuming process, especially when it involves adopting new technology, and we thank these physician practices for their commitment to improving care for their patients."

The award is based on four components: top performance on nationally recognized clinical outcome measures, regular use of population care management methods (such as early detection and disease management), participation in data reporting quality initiatives, and implementation of tools and processes to promote patient engagement and improve the patient's experience.

Physician practices applied to participate in the non-competitive program. Practices were required to demonstrate how they provided exemplary care and used health information technology in calendar year 2014.
