Transfer of the Commissioner of Canada Elections to the Public Prosecution Service of Canada

GATINEAU, QUÉBEC--(Marketwired - Oct. 1, 2014) - The formal transfer of the Commissioner of Canada Elections from Elections Canada to the Public Prosecution Service of Canada (PPSC) has officially taken place, following an Order in Council that fixed October 1, 2014 as the date that applicable sections of the Canada Elections Act came into force.

A Statement of Principles was jointly approved by the Commissioner of Canada Elections, Mr. Yves Côté, and the Director of Public Prosecutions, Mr. Brian Saunders. This statement reflects the fact that the Commissioner and the Director exercise their statutory duties independently from each other, even while operating within the same organization.

The Commissioner of Canada Elections remains an independent officer responsible for ensuring compliance with, and enforcement of, the Canada Elections Act and the federal Referendum Act.

The Public Prosecution Service of Canada is responsible for prosecuting offences under federal jurisdiction in a manner that is free of any improper influence and that respects the public interest. The PPSC is also responsible for providing prosecution-related advice to law enforcement agencies across Canada.
