The Slow Motion, Hypnotic Beauty of Stainless to Transform Subway Screens During Scotiabank Nuit Blanche

PATTISON Onestop presents Stainless, a mesmerizing video installation by Berlin-based, Hungarian artist Adam Magyar. Shot in subway stations around the world, Stainless explores transience and time, and inhabits the margin between still photography and motion pictures.

Excerpts of Magyar's Stainless series, slow motion urban portraits that were shot in New York City's 42nd Street subway, Berlin's Alexanderplatz and Tokyo's Shinjuku, will play non-stop, without interruption by news and advertisements for 12 straight hours across Toronto on all PATTISON Onestop subway screens from 7:00 p.m. on October 4, 2014 for Scotiabank Nuit Blanche. Adam Magyar's celebrated Stainless videos capture waiting commuters in super slow-motion resulting in a series of real-life tableaux, reminding us that we are not anonymous or invisible when we move through public space. Magyar sees the individuals captured in Stainless as "an endless row of living sculptures brought together by the same subway line, the same direction, the same intention of taking the train to get caught and carried away by the urban flow. All their motions slowed down, they are graceful and stainless, holding their breath waiting for their train to pull into the station."

"The particular site-specificity of this presentation of Stainless adds another layer of meaning to the work," said Sharon Switzer, National Arts Programmer and Curator, PATTISON Onestop. "Nuit Blanche subway users will see themselves mirrored in these stark tableaux, and will hopefully take a moment to contemplate their own current state of being."

Adam Magyar has received international attention for his technological approach to creating art. When creating Stainless, Magyar shot the raw footage for the videos at 56 times normal speed, turning 12-second blurs into nearly 12-minute films of mesmerizing slowness. The breathtaking clarity of Stainless is also the result of the most challenging software code he has ever written. Magyar wrote complex programs to improve the quality of images shot in conditions of low lighting and poor contrast, and spent nearly two years developing noise-reduction software to deal with image noise-columns, rows, lines, and other random distortions.

Stainless is the 2014 contribution to Drift, PATTISON Onestop and Art for Commuters' annual Nuit Blanche programming, which features a different programme of experimental video art and digital abstraction each year; drifting across subway platforms on the PATTISON Onestop network of TTC screens. About the Artist: Adam Magyar (born 1972) is a Berlin-based, Hungarian photographer.
