The Canadian Legacy Project: The 2014 Veterans Food Drive

CALGARY, ALBERTA--(Marketwired - Oct. 21, 2014) - The Canadian Legacy Project is pleased to announce the start of the 8^th Annual Veterans Food Drive. Companies, schools, social groups, families and individuals are being encouraged to secure food and cash donations to support our deserving veterans and seniors. From November 1^st to November 15^th people can drop off their donations at Crown Surplus in Inglewood which is located at 1005 - 11^th Street SE.

"This event goes a long way to make sure our veterans do not go hungry. We need to fill the warehouses with food to sustain the growing number of veterans who need this assistance. Last year we saw so many companies and schools collect huge amounts of food and cash donations and this year we hope to surpass those totals," stated Marie Blackburn, Director at the Veterans Food Bank and The Calgary Poppy Fund. The Calgary Veterans Food Bank is the only one of its kind in Canada!

Crown Surplus is back on side to support the event. "Our company rallies behind this event each year because it is a chance to give back to those who put their lives on the line. We encourage Calgarians to come to our store (Crown Surplus - 1005 - 11st SE) and drop off non-perishable food donations or cash donations to support our veterans and seniors", said John Cumming, General Manager of Crown Surplus."

The Canadian Legacy Project is once again working with Calgary Co-op Association to purchase food gift cards for our veterans with all the cash donations raised through the event. "Calgary Co-op is thrilled to support the 8^th Annual Veterans Food Drive. We are committed to supporting this program through donating an additional 10% for all food cards the Canadian Legacy Project purchases at Calgary Co-op," stated Laura Babin, Community Foundation Director at Calgary Co-op Association.

Last year Calgarians helped generate over $80,000 in cash donations and filled two warehouses full of food for the Calgary Veterans Food Bank, which is run by the Calgary Poppy Fund. One of the biggest supporters was our local schools and their students. The Calgary Board of Education and The Calgary Catholic school board has sent out the event information to all of their schools and encouraged the faculty and students to raise funds and food for the 8^th Annual Veterans Food Drive. In exchange for this amazing support, The Canadian Legacy Project arranges for local veterans to visit the schools and give presentations on Canada's involvement in past and current peace keeping missions.

Over the years the quality of life for our military veterans has been on a serious decline and the Canadian Legacy Project, a registered charity, was created to help improve this situation. "The annual Veterans Food Drive is an opportunity for Calgarians to show their support for those who gave us our freedoms and way of life," stated David Howard, President of The Canadian Legacy Project. "Sadly it is our younger veterans coming back from Afghanistan that are in dire need. These veterans are having a hard time finding jobs, they are struggling with PTSD and are living in poverty. There are no excuses for the people who made Canada such a great country to go hungry," stated Howard.

Individuals and corporations who are unable to get down to Crown Surplus but wish to make a cash donation can send their donations to The Canadian Legacy Project at #210, 1235 - 17^th Ave SW. Calgary, Alberta, T2T 0C2. Cheques should be made payable to the Canadian Legacy Project (a registered charity). Tax receipts will be issued for all donations over $20. Donations can also be made online at www.canadianlegacy.org Cash donations are used to buy grocery store gift cards which veterans and seniors can use to buy much needed groceries.
