The Future of LASIK: Dr. Michael Mazaheri's New Flapless, No-Cut LASIK Protocol Now Has a Patent in Progress

RICHARDSON, TX--(Marketwired - Oct 31, 2014) -  Dr. Michael Mazaheri, founder of M LASIK Center (http://www.themlasikcenter.com/lasik.html), has pioneered a brand new approach to performing routine LASIK surgery using an advanced, next-generation PRK method that does not require cutting of the flaps.

In a typical LASIK procedure, a flap is cut on the front of the cornea. This allows the surgeon to access the stroma (under cornea). An excimer laser is then used to correct the vision impairment by flattening or steepening the cornea. After the procedure has been completed, the flap is placed back over the cornea.

The flap does not really heal as other organs do and later can still open up again, causing complications. This was the main motivation for Dr. Mazaheri to move towards the flapless procedure.

Standard LASIK procedures have up to a 5.7% risk of complications, according to the American Journal of Ophthalmology. If the flap is incorrectly made, it might not heal properly. This can result in a complication called striae; microscopic wrinkles in the flap that can distort vision and cause dry eyes.

Dr. Michael Mazaheri now has a patent in progress (patent #: US 20070088342 A1) to promote the flapless, no-cut LASIK procedure - something he has spent the past ten years perfecting.

How it Works:

  • An HD-guided laser and an advanced PRK procedure can treat nearsightedness, astigmatism and farsightedness without any cutting.
  • The patient is prepped for surgery first. Then a brush-like instrument is used to remove a small layer of the corneal epithelium.
  • An excimer laser is then used to reshape the cornea.
  • The patient wears special contact lenses while their epithelium heals.

"I have enhanced this procedure to a point where today we are one of the only LASIK centers that doesn't cut flaps," Dr. Mazaheri said. "We are hoping that more centers around the world will start performing this surface ablation (flapless LASIK) procedure in the near future."
