Albertan Ingenuity Lab's 4D Technology Brings New Hope to Medicine

LONDON, UNITED KINGDOM--(Marketwired - Nov. 24, 2015) - In contrast to 3D technology, little is known about 4D technology and its potentially transformative effect on the future of healthcare. Speaking to The New Economy about the technology's game-changing potential, Dr Carlo Montemagno, Director of Alberta's Ingenuity Lab, says, "4D technology in my mind is really the next wave. It's nanotechnology 2.0."

In short, 4D technology allows medical experts access to a level of complexity that, up until now, has been unattainable. "It has greatly expanded the opportunity for making new products, to have a larger scale of production, and a larger envelope of properties and opportunities," says Montemagno, again speaking to The New Economy. Albertan Ingenuity Lab's 4D technology brings new hope to medicine.

Using sophisticated chemistry, 4D technology prompts inanimate objects and materials to respond intuitively to light, wind, temperature changes and a whole host of other triggers. Ultimately, 4D technology interacts with nature and changes the surrounding environment.

Spearheaded by the likes of Alberta's Ingenuity Lab and others, 4D technology could have huge implications for healthcare, and the technology surely holds the key to creating responsive body parts. "When you want to replace a body part… it's very, very complex because it's not a homogenous structure," says Montemagno. "With 4D manufacturing I can put in molecules that trigger different pieces of the structure so that when it's interfaced with the body, ultimately you end up with a material that has the same basic properties as you started with."

Should Ingenuity Lab succeed in its mission to bring 4D technology to a mass market, the technology could give rise to a medical revolution.
