German Cancer Research Center Tackles Cancer With Datameer Modern BI Platform

SAN FRANCISCO, CA--(Marketwired - June 21, 2016) - Cancer is responsible for the early deaths of millions of people worldwide each year. In Germany alone, more than 450,000 people are diagnosed with cancer each year. The German Cancer Research Center (DKFZ), the largest biomedical research institute in Germany, collaborated with Datameer and Fujitsu to deploy Fujitsu PRIMEFLEX Integrated System for Hadoop, a powerful and scalable server cluster that integrates Datameer's analytic platform. On July 14, Datameer will host a free webinar with Fujitsu to share how self-service analytics played a crucial role in identifying common triggers and indicators relevant to cancer.

In the webinar, Fujitsu will detail the huge challenges DKFZ faced in analyzing the petabytes of patient data that is critical to understanding genetic variants in human DNA and cancer cells. The human genome has three billion base pairs and with thousands of patients, oversampling factors of up to 100 and several tissue samples per patient, its analytic systems were overwhelmed. Traditional HPC clusters encountered data reduction issues and resulted in weeks, or even months of analysis.

In a remarkable breakthrough for genomic analysis and personalized medicine, researchers can now quickly analyze the complete, raw genomic data sets of multiple patients in parallel thanks to the power and scalability of Fujitsu PRIMEFLEX Integrated System for Hadoop. Datameer's spreadsheet-like interface allows researchers without programming knowledge to analyze the data directly, while its Flipside functionality enables visual data profiling throughout the entire big data analytics workflow.
