$5-Million Contract Awarded for Building Two New Channel Survey and Sounding Vessels As Part of the National Shipbuilding Strategy Small Vessel Construction Program

The Government of Canada is committed to provide the men and women of the Canadian Coast Guard with the modern equipment required to do their important work in a timely and efficient way.

Kate Young, Member of Parliament for London West, on behalf of the Honourable Judy M. Foote, Minister of Public Services and Procurement, announced today that as part of the National Shipbuilding Strategy small vessel construction program a $5-million contract has been awarded to Kanter Marine of St. Thomas, ON, for building two Channel Survey and Sounding Vessels (CSSV).

These two new vessels will replace the two current CSSVs operational in the St. Lawrence Seaway in Central and Arctic region, which have been in operation for an average of 37.5 years and are nearing the end of their lifespan.

The new CSSVs will provide private and commercial boaters with information about channel bottom conditions and water depth predictions. These vessels will also provide the Department of Fisheries and Oceans as well as other departments and agencies, the capability to monitor and observe marine and environmental conditions.

Quick Facts

• The cost of the contract for two Channel Survey and Sounding vessels is $5,450,000 inclusive of taxes.

• The contract also includes an option for two additional boats at $2,750,000 each, inclusive of taxes, and another option for two wheeled cradles for the purpose of taking the vessels in and out of the water, at $203,400 inclusive of taxes.

• The CSSVs will be a catamaran design between 11.50m and 11.99m in length.

• The new CSSV class will reflect the advancements and new standards existing in the field of hydrographic surveys, such as multibeam sonars, sidescan sonars, and modern data acquisition and processing technologies.

• The presence of Canadian Coast Guard vessels facilitates detailed situational awareness, and a capability for direct action with resources trained to assess and execute those actions.
