Barefoot Networks and FOX Networks Showcase Forwarding Plane Programmability for Professional Network Media

Presentation at EBU Network Technology Seminar 2017 in Geneva demonstrates 6.5Tb/s Barefoot Tofino switch running FOX Networks' P4 program

PALO ALTO, CA--(Marketwired - Jun 20, 2017) - At the European Broadcasting Union Network Technology Seminar 2017, June 20-21, 2017, Barefoot Networks and FOX Networks will showcase the application of Barefoot's 6.5Tb/s Tofino™ switch and P4 language for broadcast network environments. Programmability of the forwarding plane is a critical requirement in today's networks to enable use cases which are not possible with fixed-function switching silicon. The richness of the open P4 ecosystem together with a high-performance P4-programmable target like Barefoot Tofino is empowering network owners and operators to create functions and features at the forwarding plane level to extract more value out of the network.

WHO:

  • Thomas Edwards, VP, Engineering and Development at FOX Networks Engineering & Operations
  • Prem Jonnalagadda, Director, Product Management at Barefoot Networks

WHAT: A session titled: "Future of Programmable Networks : A P4 Programmable Forwarding Plane for Professional Network Media" - An overview of programmable forwarding plane technology and its applications to professional network media. The presentation will include details on FOX Networks' use cases requiring the forwarding plane to perform packet processing functions like using fields from RTP headers for packet forwarding and load balancing and applying Network Address Translation to multicast replicated packets which today's fixed-function switches cannot achieve. There will be a live demonstration of switching media streams based on RTP timestamps use case where FOX Networks' P4 program will be shown running on Barefoot Tofino.

WHEN: June 21, 2017, 4:30-5:00pm CET

WHERE: The EBU Network Technology Seminar (NTS), L'Ancienne-Route 17A, CH-1218 Grand Saconnex, Geneva. The demo can be seen at the STORDIS / Barefoot table in the Gothard room on the reception floor.

The EBU's annual event focused on media network architecture and attracts broadcast experts dealing with IT infrastructure, IT networking and storage. This year's event focuses on IP, virtualization and the use of cloud in production.

About Barefoot Networks
Barefoot Networks launched in 2016 after two years of developing the most programmable and -- at 6.5Terabits/second -- the fastest switches ever built; twice as fast as the previous on record. By enabling organizations to define the network forwarding plane in software, Barefoot empowers network owners and their infrastructure partners to design, optimize, and innovate to meet their specific requirements and gain competitive advantage. In combining the P4 programming language with fast programmable switches, Barefoot has also created an ecosystem for compilers, tools, and P4 programs to make P4 accessible to anybody. Barefoot's founders -- Pat Bosshart, Martin Izzard, Dan Lenoski, Nick McKeown -- brought to the company more than 100 years of experience in building the fastest and biggest networking systems in the world. Backed by Google Inc., Goldman Sachs Principal Strategic Investments, Alibaba, Tencent, Hewlett Packard Ventures, Dell Technologies Capital and by premier venture capital firms Sequoia Capital, Lightspeed Venture Partners, and Andreessen Horowitz, Barefoot Networks is headquartered in Silicon Valley.
