Governing Approved for $150,000 Engagement Award for Project on Innovation Dissemination across State & Local Health Systems

WASHINGTON, DC--(Marketwired - July 18, 2017) - Governing has been approved for a $150,000 funding award through the Eugene Washington PCORI Engagement Awards program, an initiative of the Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Institute (PCORI). The funds will support the diffusion of innovation, promising practices and new evidence about person-centered, outcome focused approaches in state and local health systems.

Mark Funkhouser, publisher of Governing, and Rhiannon Gainor, director of research, will lead the engagement project at Governing. Through a survey followed by a series of in-person convenings, this program is designed to explore if and to what extent evidence and clinical effectiveness research are informing state and local healthcare policy and practice and to facilitate engagement with a core stakeholder group: policy makers and health officials.

"State and local health officials and their agencies are key to developing the policies, guidelines and governance models that will empower system transformation and better population health outcomes," explained Funkhouser. "It is crucial to engage policy makers and public health leaders in operationalizing new evidence and new clinical care standards into data-informed and effective on-the-ground interventions. The core concept behind Governing's model for public sector innovation is bringing together communities of learning to share knowledge, identify best practices and work through challenges collaboratively. That's our goal with this project supported by PCORI."

Spreading Ideas - Improving Outcomes: Driving Innovation in State & Local Health Systems is part of a portfolio of projects PCORI has funded to help develop a community of patients and other healthcare stakeholders who have the knowledge, skills and partnerships to participate in and advance patient-centered outcomes research and patient-centered comparative effectiveness research.

"This project was selected for PCORI Engagement Award funding for its commitment to improving the capacity for patients and other stakeholders to engage in patient-centered research and its potential to increase the usefulness and trustworthiness of the research PCORI funds," said Jean Slutsky, PCORI's chief engagement and dissemination officer. "We look forward to following the project's progress and working with Governing to share the results."

Governing's project and the other projects approved for funding by the PCORI Engagement Award Program were selected through a highly competitive review process in which applications were assessed for their ability to meet PCORI's engagement goals and objectives, as well as program criteria.
