ARNBC Brings a New Voice to Nursing

VANCOUVER, BRITISH COLUMBIA--(Marketwire - May 9, 2012) - The Association of Registered Nurses of British Columbia (ARNBC) is proud to be holding its first ever Annual General Meeting on May 9, 2012 as part of Nursing Week Festivities that recognize the skill, knowledge and commitment of registered nurses around the world.

"We are so proud of what the Association has accomplished in just two years," said Susan Duncan, ARNBC President. "The AGM is an opportunity to celebrate the strides we've made as a profession and an organization, and to give notice that the ARNBC intends to be a strong, progressive voice for the nursing profession for many years to come."

The ARNBC was formed in July 2010, in response to recent changes in legislation that made it impossible for the College of Registered Nurses of British Columbia to continue their historical role of advocating for the nursing profession. In order to continue to bring a nursing perspective to key social and health policy initiatives, nurses across British Columbia have come forward seeking a new voice that can advocate on behalf of their profession and the health and safety of the public.

"We are very indebted to the decades of great work that has been done by the College and the Union in British Columbia," said Rob Calnan, outgoing Co-Chair. "However, we recognize that each of these organizations has specific roles within the health system. The College is in place to protect patients, while the Union is in place to protect nurses. As a result, there are times when government or the media are looking for a nursing voice that only articulates the expert views of the profession. We are honoured that nurses have chosen to join us and make the ARNBC that voice."

Highlights of 2011/2012 include:

  • September 8, 2011 Nursing Forum http://www.arnbc.ca/arnbc-forum.php
  • ARNBC joining the Canadian Nurses Association (CNA) Board as the BC representative
  • Launch of new ARNBC website, including integrated social media tools and a popular blog www.arnbc.ca/blog
  • Canadian Nurses Association tour of BC
  • Nearly 50 facilitated consultation sessions completed across the province http://www.arnbc.ca/consultations/index.php
  • Attendance at 20 events--forums, speaking engagements and conferences

The ARNBC Annual General Meeting will be held May 9th, 2012, from 6pm to 8pm at the Paetzold Auditorium, Vancouver General Hospital, or via webcast. Please see http://www.arnbc.ca/agm/index.php for further information.

"This is an exciting time for our Association and for nursing in BC, and we're thrilled to bring together nurses to once again celebrate our achievements," said Duncan. "Congratulations to all BC nurses this nursing week. Your dedication and caring make it possible for British Columbians to receive the best care possible."
