North State Communications, One of Largest ILECs in U.S., Chooses PacketLogic for Flexible, Accurate Deep Packet Inspection

LOS GATOS, CA -- January 29, 2008 -- Procera® Networks, Inc. (AMEX: PKT), a pioneering developer of telco-class network traffic and service management infrastructure equipment, today announced that North State Communications, one of the nation's 20 largest communications companies, has selected Procera's PacketLogic™ solution to manage broadband network traffic and bandwidth. PacketLogic provides highly accurate and scalable deep packet inspection (DPI) technology, allowing service providers and other network managers to efficiently and effectively manage and optimize their broadband networks.

North State Communications, an Independent Local Exchange Company (ILEC), offers a complete line of wireless, broadband, data, phone and digital television services to business and residential customers in the Piedmont Triad Region of North Carolina. The company serves more than 100,000 subscribers in total, and delivers broadband network connectivity over its 600-square-mile service area via DSL, T1, and fiber-optic connections. On an average day, the network handles about 3.5 terabytes (3.5 trillion bytes) of IP traffic.

Growth in its subscriber base and network traffic had outstripped the capacity of North State's legacy DPI solution, and the network management team began investigating and evaluating alternatives. PacketLogic was selected for its pinpoint accuracy in network application traffic identification; intuitive, easy-to-use interface; and enhanced features such as filtering and traffic shaping. PacketLogic is installed at the core of North State's IP network, and provides monitoring, analysis and optimization of all traffic into and out of the network.

"PacketLogic gives us a wider range of functionality than our previous system, and has allowed us to be much more proactive in locating trouble in our network," said David Rich, manager of data services for North State Communications. "If we suspect that a customer's computer has been infected by a virus, for example, we can drill down into the IP traffic to confirm our suspicion, put PacketLogic rules in place to choke off transmission of the virus, and then notify the customer of the problem so that they can run antivirus software on their system."

"The Piedmont Triad Region is a fast-growing, robust economy, and our customers rely on high-quality broadband access to get business done, as well as for personal use," said James D. McCarson, CTO of North State Communications. "We have consistently been a leader in evaluating and adopting advanced technologies to provide our customers with the best possible service. PacketLogic allows us to assure our customers of quality of service, and equally as importantly, quality of experience in their broadband services."

"North State Communications exemplifies the innovative spirit of independent service providers in providing their customers with world-class service," said Jeff Gigoux, director of business development at Procera Networks. "As Internet usage has grown, bandwidth-intensive applications and malware have also proliferated. It has become ever-more important to accurately identify, manage and optimize network traffic in order to deliver high-quality broadband services."

The PacketLogic product family includes the PL5600, PL7600, PL7620 and PL9200 models, which range from 2 Mbps to 8 Gbps bidirectional throughput capacity. The modular software design includes Surveillance (standard in all PacketLogic systems), Filtering, Traffic Shaping, Statistics and Web Statistics options.
