10 Years After 9/11, CliniComp Essentris® EMR Continues to Support

NYC Hospital: Seamless Clinical Documentation

SAN DIEGO, CA--(Marketwire - Sep 15, 2011) - On September 11, 2001, Bellevue Hospital Center, the flagship facility of New York City's Health and Hospitals Corporation, became the busiest medical haven, treating survivors and victims from lower Manhattan to the United Nations complex and beyond.

In the aftermath of the New York 9/11 tragedies that changed our nation's history forever, Bellevue Hospital's CliniComp Essentris® inpatient electronic medical record system was the only one that did not go down, maintaining service without interruption. No small feat considering that New York City hospitals did not even have phone service for days following 9/11. In some cases they could not even communicate within their own facilities.

Margaret Whitehorn, RN and former hospital Clinical Director of Surgical/Trauma Services for the Department of Surgery, was present at Bellevue during and after the terrorist attacks. She explained how vital CliniComp Essentris was to Bellevue Hospital:

"On the morning of 9/11 during the first terrorist attack, our operating rooms were already fully occupied. Having CliniComp Essentris in place allowed us to assist all the critical care patients, moving them from their recovery rooms to the ICU, which in turn allowed us to move patients from the operating rooms to available recovery rooms. The system gave us the information we required to assess every patient in every interconnected Critical Care Unit (CCU) so we could evaluate and safely move patients to med surge beds thereby increasing availability. Without CliniComp Essentris it would have been impossible to organize this task and provide room for the massive amount of casualties we were expecting. The system was seamless!"

In 1991, Bellevue hospital went live with CliniComp Essentris EMR in all eight of their CCUs. The System's standard of performance is unique in the industry as CliniComp Essentris was designed to be reliable and accessible operating in real time so that no single point of failure could impede its functionality, ensuring no patient data is ever lost.

"Since its inception nearly three decades ago, CliniComp Essentris has experienced a unique history of zero downtime and is able to tolerate hardware, software and power failures without loss of operation. This is especially important in a disaster situation," said CliniComp, Intl. Chairman and CEO, Chris Haudenschild. "CliniComp, Intl. is honored we could be there during 9/11 and after to support clinicians at Bellevue by providing a reliable and robust documentation system." Considering the recent events of Hurricane Irene's 2011 August visit to the east coast, the importance of having a system with this level of reliability is apparent. In the after effects of Irene, CliniComp Essentris weathered the storm and again came through for Bellevue.

New York City awarded Bellevue Hospital $16 million to develop the World Trade Center Treatment Center over a span of five years. In keeping with the hospital's principle to never turn anyone away, the program provides free health evaluations, medical and mental health treatment to 9/11 rescue crewmembers, including those without health insurance or those who do not qualify for other programs.

Today, ten years later, Bellevue provides care to nearly 100,000 emergency patient visits in more than 90 adult and pediatric ambulatory care clinics and more than 5,000 seniors annually. CliniComp Essentris is currently in the process of upgrading Bellevue's system to its latest version and anticipates many years of continued success in supporting the clinicians there as they provide its patients with the highest level of care.
