140 Volunteers, 18 Communication Tools and Three Events Will Benefit 2100 Veterans

Cell Phones For Soldiers and AT&T's Three-City Effort Aids Veterans

BOSTON, MA--(Marketwired - July 15, 2014) - As a result of three recent events, Cell Phones For Soldiers and AT&T will impact more than 2100 veterans by donating 18 communication tools and providing 140 volunteers to complete essential tasks at three different veteran-focused organizations.

Cell Phones For Soldiers, a national nonprofit focused on the communication needs of troops and veterans, teamed up with long-time supporter, AT&T, to execute a multi-city effort throughout May and June in support of three organizations.

  • Based in Richmond, Va., HomeAgain is a nonprofit organization assisting single individuals, families and veterans experiencing homelessness by providing emergency and transitional shelter and permanent supportive housing as well as skill-building programs.
  • Since 1949, the Union Gospel Mission in Dallas has provided services to homeless veterans housing up to 40 at a time.

"Our nation's veterans have made sacrifices to protect our country and our freedoms, and as a company, we see it as an honor to support them," said Jason Leiker, Associate Vice President, AT&T Community Engagement. "Whether it was cleaning wheelchairs and gardening, to brightening many veterans' days by serving a hot meal, our employees came away from these events humbled and honored to show their support in this way. We are grateful to Cell Phones For Soldiers for the opportunity to team up with them."

Cell Phones For Soldiers donated 18 communication tools including seven desktop computers, three AT&T iPads, eight cellphones with service and AT&T internet service.

The equipment will assist veterans in connecting with family members and potential employers, allow veterans to access their medical records and be utilized bedside for veterans with spinal cord injuries.

"Cell Phones For Soldiers is a lifeline for America's bravest, for those serving and those who have served," said Robbie Bergquist, co-founder of Cell Phones For Soldiers. "From cellphones to use for job searches to computers for communication with family, these tools are essential for our veterans."

Additionally, approximately 140 AT&T employees rolled up their sleeves to lend a helping hand during the three events. Inspired by the AT&T Community Engagement program, volunteers tackled painting tasks, gardened, prepared 500 snack kits for homeless veterans, washed wheelchairs, served lemonade, cleaned and completed small facility repairs.

Supporting Cell Phones For Soldiers since 2007, AT&T and its customers have donated more than $4.5 million to support the Cell Phones For Soldiers organization.
