2 Styles: Art show at the Chocolate Claim

20% of proceeds to go to Carcross School lunch program.

Attention: Arts/Entertainment Editor, Lifestyle Editor WHITEHORSE, YUKON, MEDIA ADVISORY--(CCNMatthews - April 8, 2007) - Spirit Lake Wilderness Resort is pleased to announce the artwork created during last year's art workshops are on display at the Chocolate Claim. The artwork consists of 19 pieces of which 18 are watercolour and one oil paintings. The works are by James E. Pay and Roel van den Hoorn. The paintings feature range from the Wheaton River to Bennett Lake and Brooklands Homestead.


James E. Pay

Jim and his wife Eileen, have traveled extensively since 1997 until 2004 and have resided in Puerto Rico and the US Virgin Islands in the Caribbean, Freeport in the Bahamas and latterly in Scotland, where most of Western Europe was visited. Returning to Ontario, Canada in 2004.

James E. Pay, AUA, was trained as an artist in Canada and USA and lists the last living member of the famous "Group of Seven", A. J. Casson, as his mentor. A member of the Society of European Artists, a signature member of the United Society of Artists of London, England and a former vice chairman of Central Arts, Scotland.

James is known for his "fast & loose" style of watercolour painting. He focuses on attention to colour design and composition, presented in a friendly and relaxing manner

The paintings in this collection were all painted during an art workshop conducted by Jim in August 2006.

Jim is scheduled to return for additional plein air workshops in September of 2007 which will feature Yukon's spectacular fall colours as the main subjects.

Roel van den Hoorn

Roel van den Hoorn was born and raised in the Netherlands where he enjoyed many art influences from Hollands' rich art history.

His formal training includes 5 years at the acadamy of fine arts in Nunspeet, Netherlands. His teachers included: Jos Lussenburg, Chris Ten Brugge-Kate, Piet Bruuns and Cor Vrendenberg.

His style is impressionist and mediums include oil, watercolour, pastel and charcoal. His favorites are watercolour and oil.

He emmigrated to Canada in 1995 and after one trip to the Yukon he fell in love with the country and moved up in 1996. He owns and operates Spirit Lake Wilderness Resort with his wife Jitske. During the summer he helps people discover their artistic side through his art workshops.


Spirit Lake Wilderness Resort specializes in organized all inclusive plein air art workshops. The art workshops take advantage of the incredible scenery found in the Southern Lakes Region, Yukon. Two workshops are scheduled for September, 2007. Local artists interested are encouraged to inquire about special Yukoner rates.

Carcross Lunch Program
