2006 MS Ski Marathon: over $28,000 Raised for Multiple Sclerosis

MONTREAL, QUEBEC--(CCNMatthews - March 23, 2006) - On Friday, February 17, nearly 65 avid skiers took to the slopes at Ski Chantecler in Sainte-Adele for the fourth MS Ski Marathon to benefit the Multiple Sclerosis Society of Canada, Quebec Division. This year's event was especially challenging as the atrocious weather that day prevented the opening of more than one run; it was icy but ski teams attempted to make as many downhill runs as possible. Their tenacity produced excellent results, however, as they raised over $28,000 for research and services for people with multiple sclerosis (MS) and their families. The skiers' efforts were invaluable to the MSSC: they showed such will and determination to make a difference for this still incurable disease.

The Ski Marathon organizers were really pleased with the outcome of the day's skiing, as well as with the skiers' participation. Despite the inclement weather and dreadful road conditions, 65 of the 75 skiers registered showed up for the event.

The $50 registration fee paid by the ski marathoners entitled them to lunch, on-site entertainment and entry in a draw for the many prizes donated by generous sponsors. In addition, every participant was asked to obtain a minimum of $200 in pledges to support the MS Society's mission.

By participating in the MS Ski Marathon and collecting pledges, the skiers contributed to progress in MS research. Multiple sclerosis is the most widespread neurological disorder among young adults in Canada. It mainly strikes women between the ages of 15 and 40. Over 12,000 Quebecers have MS.
