2009 Subaru Outback: Dynamic Performance for City Living and Summer Fun

MISSISSAUGA, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - June 5, 2008) - Subaru Canada, Inc. (SCI) today announced that the 2009 Subaru Outback lineup will reach dealerships ahead of schedule and ready for summer adventures. But while Outback is easy on gas-especially when compared to traditional 4-wheel drive SUVs-it retains the go-anywhere capability and power that makes every trip a pleasure, on or off the beaten path.

For the new model year, the Outback lineup consists of the base 2.5i, the PZEV Plus, the 2.5i Limited Package, and the 3.0R Premier:

- every Outback is equipped with Sirius Satellite Radio, and includes a
free 3-month trial subscription.

- the base 2.5i is newly fitted with heated front seats, a power-
adjustable driver's seat, and splash guards.

- the Outback PZEV Plus has added equipment for 2009, including Vehicle
Dynamics Control, an upgraded new 9-speaker Harman Kardon sound
system, privacy glass for the rear doors and cargo area, body-
coloured door handles and side mirrors with integrated LED turn
signals, leather-wrapped steering wheel and gear selector, and splash

- the 2009 2.5i Limited Package also gets the new Harman Kardon
amplifier and speakers, rear privacy glass and splash guards.

- the 3.0R Premier is also updated with the new Harman Kardon stereo,
rear privacy glass, and splash guards.

"The Outback is for anyone who wants go-anywhere All-Wheel Drive confidence in a right-size vehicle that's as at home in the city as it is in the back woods," said Katsuhiro Yokoyama, president and CEO of SCI. "Versatile and rugged, the Outback fills the bill for people who want a vehicle that complements their active lifestyle but is still easy to park and maneuver on crowded city streets."

The naturally aspirated 2.5-litre engine fitted with 5-speed manual transmission achieves class-leading fuel economy, using just 10.6 L/100km (city) and 7.6 L/100km (highway).

Power When You Need It

The 2009 Outback 2.5i, PZEV Plus, and 2.5i Limited Package are equipped with Subaru's 2.5-litre 4-cylinder SOHC 16-valve horizontally opposed SUBARU BOXER that produces 170 hp at 6,000 rpm and 170 lb.-ft. of torque at 4,400 rpm. This naturally aspirated engine offers a broad power band for maximum efficiency and spirited performance. On 2.5i, 2.5i Touring Package and PZEV Plus, this engine can be paired with either a 5-speed manual transmission or a 4-speed direct control (4EAT) automatic transmission with SPORTSHIFT.

The Outback 3.0R Premier is equipped with Subaru's 3.0-litre DOHC 6-cylinder engine, which produces 245 horsepower at 6,600 rpm and 215 lb-ft of torque at 4,200 rpm, mated to Subaru's 5EAT transmission with SPORTSHIFT.

The Subaru 3.0R engine employs both Active Valve Control System (AVCS) variable valve timing technology and Active Valve Lift (AVL) variable valve lift technology. This combination results in one of the most advanced valve control systems on the market. Subaru AVCS and AVL vary both cam phasing (intake valve timing) and the amount of lift exerted on the intake valves.

AVCS optimizes the engine's volumetric efficiency throughout the rev band by adjusting intake camshaft timing to employ the ideal intake and exhaust valve overlap under all engine operating conditions. AVCS can rotate the intake camshafts through a range of 35 degrees relative to the crankshaft. The Engine Control Module (ECM) regulates this movement, based on input from various sensors-airflow, engine coolant temperature, throttle position and camshaft position. These systems enhance power at all engine speeds while ensuring optimal efficiency and low emissions.

The Power of SI-DRIVE

The Outback 3.0R Premier is equipped with Subaru's advanced SI-DRIVE engine management system that allows drivers to choose between three performance modes. When Intelligent mode is selected, the system reduces engine torque and maximum power and switches to a more relaxed throttle response curve. By controlling throttle angle and response of the Electronic Throttle Control system, SI-DRIVE restrains peak output by about 20 percent.

Intelligent mode is an ideal choice to provide smoother response while commuting in traffic, for example, where it can increase real-world fuel economy by as much as 10 percent. In addition, Intelligent mode's more relaxed responses and lower peak torque output can be used to complement the low-traction surface driving safety provided by the Subaru Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive System.

In Sport mode, performance is enhanced by quick throttle responses and powerful, linear acceleration. The linear acceleration characteristic of this versatile mode makes it ideal for driving on freeways and suburban streets and for merging or overtaking other vehicles on the highway with confidence.

In Sport Sharp mode, SI-DRIVE modifies the engine's electronic throttle mapping to deliver lightning-quick throttle response and more power, sooner. Sport Sharp mode also employs a more aggressive shift map, holding lower gears longer for more power. As its name might suggest, Sport Sharp mode enhances the performance feel of the car and is ideal for tackling twisty roads.

5-Speed Automatic Transmission with SPORTSHIFT

SPORTSHIFT is standard on every 2009 Outback equipped with Subaru's 4- or 5-speed electronic direct control automatic transmission. On the 3.0R Premier, this system also includes the 'blipping control' that matches engine speed with wheel speed for smoother downshifting.

SPORTSHIFT still allows manual shift control in all SI-DRIVE modes, but alters the shift map to respond to the selection of Intelligent, Sport or Sport Sharp mode.

The transmission on the 3.0R Premier uses a lateral-g sensor and cornering logic to choose and hold the appropriate gear when cornering. The transmission helps maintain traction when the vehicle is accelerating out of a corner by using more rapid downshifting. For inclines, the 5-speed automatic transmission helps maintain traction by downshifting actively. For downhill control, the transmission maintains efficient engine braking by holding the most suitable gear.

A raised suspension optimizes both handling and ride comfort, and Subaru's four wheel/four channel/four sensor Anti-lock Braking System and Electronic Brake Force Distribution help ensure safe, controlled stops on all surfaces in all kinds of weather.

Interior Enhancements for Value and Convenience

Outback continues to be equipped with a broad range of standard features, including a 60/40 split flat-folding rear seat; cruise control; power windows, door locks and mirrors; dual-mode trip odometer; and generous cabin storage. All models also feature a tilting/telescoping steering wheel to optimize driving position and improve ease of entry and exit.

For even greater convenience, Outback has a keyless entry transmitter integrated into the key blade. The system includes four buttons - lock, unlock, trunk and panic - and the most frequently used 'lock' button is the largest, positioned to be easily accessible in the centre of the transmitter.

To this equipment, the 2009 Outback 2.5i PZEV Plus, Limited Package and 3.0R Premier add a premium 9-speaker Harman/Kardon audio system with amplifier. Tuned specifically for Subaru, the new audio system provides the ultimate in listening pleasure: crisp, accurate and lavish sound.

Custom-optimizing the system for the dimensions of each vehicle's interior, Harman Kardon's engineers improved bass response and reduced distortion through the use of neodymium magnets and other space-age materials. The 440-watt 8-channel system employs Digital Signal Processing (DSP) that continually evaluates more than 100 unique audio parameters to capture every nuance of the recording and reamplify it for maximum audio quality.

In addition to the new features already mentioned, the 2.5i Limited Package further adds standard 17-inch 7-spoke aluminum wheels; woodgrain trim; windshield wiper/de-icer; sport-design electroluminescent gauges; automatic dual-zone climate control; power tilt-and-slide twin-panel glass moonroof; power-adjustable, folded, heated exterior mirrors; contoured multi-reflector halogen (high) and projector beam halogen (low) headlights with auto-off; multi-reflector halogen fog lights; raised-profile roof rails with lockable crossbars; an integrated roofline rear spoiler; and a retractable cargo cover and cargo area tray.

The 2009 3.0R Premier Package is the most luxurious Outback, adding a GPS DVD-based navigation and vehicle monitor system with touch-screen display; Homelink garage door opener; leather upholstery with leather-wrapped gear selector and parking brake; and 17-inch 5-spoke aluminum alloy wheels.

Safety First for Safety Leader

Every Subaru is built to the highest levels of passive safety. The 2009 Outback is fitted with 'smart' dual-stage deployment front airbags with a passenger detection system for the passenger airbag, front seat-mounted side impact airbags, side curtain airbags, and height-adjustable active front head restraints. The three point front seatbelts with pretensioners and force limiters are also height adjustable, and all passenger seatbelts are ALR/ELR type. Three LATCH system child safety seat tethers in the rear seat and rear child safety doorlocks help create a safe environment for small passengers.

A driver's seat kneeguard helps reduce injuries to the driver in the event of a frontal collision, and the stalk section of the driver's seatbelt has been changed from a webbed construction to a metal design that helps ensure the belt is held firmly against the driver's pelvis during a collision, reducing the possibility of stomach injury. The stalk also oscillates, making it more convenient to engage and remove and more comfortable to wear.

A hold-the-line pricing strategy for Outback means that the 2009 Outback 2.5i with 5-speed manual transmission will have a Manufacturer's Suggested Retail Price (MSRP) identical to the previous model-$30,995. The MSRP of the PZEV Plus, in spite of added equipment worth over $1,300, goes up in price by just $450 to $34,145 when equipped with the 5-speed manual transmission. Similarly, the Outback 2.5i Limited Package adds equipment valued at over $900, but increases in price by only $250 to $39,245 for models with a 4-speed manual transmission. The luxurious 3.0R Premier actually decreases in price by $2,400 to $43,595.

The 2009 Legacy and Outback PZEV are built at Subaru of Indiana Automotive (SIA), the first U.S. automotive assembly plant to be designated a wildlife habitat. In addition, it was the first US manufacturing facility to reach zero landfill status where nothing from its manufacturing effort goes into landfill-it is all reused and recycled. In addition to reducing the environmental impact of its vehicles, Subaru is committed to integrating sound environmental practices throughout its business. Subaru was the first automotive manufacturer in North America to receive the stringent ISO 14001 environmental management standard. Since then, Subaru has achieved ISO 14001 accreditation across its entire North American operation, including administration offices, distribution warehouses and service technical training centres.
