2009 Uniform Evaluation: Six Quebec candidates make the national Honour Roll

MONTREAL, QUEBEC--(Marketwire - Dec. 4, 2009) - The results of the 2009 Uniform Evaluation (UFE) were released this morning and the Ordre des comptables agrees du Quebec is very pleased to announce that 599 Quebec candidates passed one of the most challenging examinations in the world.

"I would like to congratulate the 599 candidates who were successful at the UFE and acknowledge the remarkable work of training employers and university professors who are invaluable partners of the Ordre," said Alain Cote, FCA, Chair of the Ordre.

This year, six aspiring CAs from Quebec earned a place on the UFE Honour Roll of the Canadian Institute of Chartered Accountants, including the recipient of the Chartered Accountants of Canada Gold Medal and cash prize of $2,500 for the highest standing in Quebec on the 2009 Uniform Evaluation.

"The prestige and credibility of the profession as well as good prospects for a national and international career were important factors in my decision to become a CA," said Gold Medal winner Etienne Girardin.

The top candidates, who will be honoured at the Ordre's Gala de la reussite to be held at the Palais des Congres de Montreal on February 20, 2010, are:

Etienne Girardin, recipient of the Chartered Accountants of Canada Gold Medal, HEC Montreal, Samson Belair/Deloitte & Touche, Montreal

Audrey Bistodeau, Universite du Quebec a Trois-Rivieres, Raymond Chabot Grant Thornton, Montreal

Jerome Bouchard, Universite du Quebec a Chicoutimi, Samson Belair/Deloitte & Touche, Chicoutimi

"For the past ten years, the Ordre has noted a steady rise in the number of Quebec candidates who are passing the UFE. The excellent cooperation between the Ordre des comptables agrees du Quebec, the universities and CA firms is definitely paying off," said Daniel McMahon, FCA, President and CEO of the Ordre.

A competency-based evaluation

All CAs in Canada are required to pass the UFE. During this three-day professional evaluation, candidates have to demonstrate that they have acquired the competencies needed to become chartered accountants and to practice public accountancy.

The purpose of the UFE is to measure candidates' ability to integrate their knowledge and competencies as well as to analyze, process and effectively communicate information. The exam enables all CA candidates in Quebec to qualify for the practice of public accountancy and to use the CA auditor designation once they have completed their training period. Subject matters include assurance, financial performance measurement, governance, strategy and risk management, corporate finance, management decision-making and taxation.

With a membership of close to 17,600 CAs and 1,900 candidates for the practice of the profession, the Ordre des comptables agrees du Quebec carries out its primary mission to protect the public by enforcing the most demanding admission criteria and ethical standards.
