2011-The Year of the Electric Car?

MANCHESTER, UNITED KINGDOM--(Marketwire - Jan. 16, 2011) - Following the recent news that Rolls Royce is considering launching an electric vehicle, Swinton car insurance is predicting that 2011 will be the year that the electric car really arrives on the roads as the first choice of car for many people, as the nation becomes more environmentally conscious.

In addition to the announcement from Rolls Royce, Nissan launches its eagerly anticipated and much lauded "Leaf" electric car model in March, which has already been commended as a brilliant model for reducing the carbon footprint. More and more electric car power points are appearing nationwide, with an extra 40 being installed in Oxfordshire and Milton Keynes in the last two days. The BBC is also getting in on the act, and this week has challenged a reporter to drive from John O' Groats to Lands End in an electric car, only using public power points to recharge the vehicle.

In a survey of 1,200 customers carried out by the leading car insurance UK retailer 57% of people admitted that they would consider an electric car as their next vehicle purchase, and 76% welcome the increase in charge points across Britain's roads. 81% said that they definitely feel more pressure to be greener and more environmentally conscious in their driving habits, in the last two years.

Swinton is welcoming the positive shift towards electric cars, but urges anyone thinking of buying one to make sure they check their current car insurance policy. Steve Chelton, Insurance Development Manager at Swinton said, "We would encourage anyone who is considering buying any new vehicle, especially a different kind of car such as an electric model, to speak to their broker first to make sure they have the right cover at the best price."
