CALGARY, ALBERTA--(Marketwired - April 2, 2013) - Three awesome songwriters - Steve Earle and the Dukes, M. Ward and Kurt Vile and the Violators - will be among the 70 artists performing at the 34th annual Festival.
M. Ward's trio performs Thursday July 25, Steve Earle and the Dukes Saturday July 27 and Kurt Vile and the Violators Sunday, July 28 at Prince's Island Park.
The unpretentious, insightful prose of the oft-covered Grammy-winning artist and celebrated actor Steve Earle has been highlighted through recordings that encompass biting rock creations, minimalist beauty and politically charged masterpieces. Earle's 14th studio album, I'll Never Get Out Of This World Alive, was released alongside his twin debut novel, which was described by fellow songwriter Patti Smith as "a dream you can't shake, offering beauty, remorse and redemption."
Since his 2000 Howe Gelb-produced debut recording, M. Ward has lead his own band, played in Monsters Of Folk and She & Him. His recent CD, A Wasteland Companion - a shared reverie documenting a sonically-diverse emotional landscape, wrapped in Ward's gravelly-yet-gentle voice - was recorded in different international locations with an evolving roster of international collaborators.
Kurt Vile has slowly and quietly become one of America's finest guitarists and songwriters. His dreamy, psychedelic tangles of damaged-but-lyrical songcraft signal a major new artist emerging from the hinterland. Vile's recent double LP, Wakin On A Pretty Daze, blends fingerpicking and heavy guitar workouts to create timeless, expansive songs.
The full 2013 Festival line-up will be released the afternoon of April 24, with tickets going on sale at 10:00 am on April 25. Visit www.calgaryfolkfest.com for previously announced 2013 artists.
