2013 Care Awards Celebrate Finest West Coast Homes

VICTORIA, BRITISH COLUMBIA--(Marketwired - Sept. 18, 2013) - Members of the Victoria Home Builders Association (VHBA) gathered to celebrate the finest in West Coast design and construction at the 2013 Construction Achievements and Renovations of Excellence Awards (CARE Awards), Fairmont Empress Hotel on Saturday, Sept 14. The event was attended by about 230 builders, renovators, designers, trades and suppliers.

MC's Astrid Braunschmidt and Andrew Johnson from CTV Vancouver Island announced the winners of 51 awards including the popular Project of the Year and People's Choice Award.

The night's big winner was The 'Dwell' on Despard by Urban Core Ventures winning six Gold CARE Awards including Project of the Year.

James View Residence by GT Mann Contracting Ltd captured the People's Choice Award, chosen by consumers casting ballots for their favourite CARE Awards project on display during the summer at Mayfair Shopping Centre, The Bay Centre and online at www.careawards.com.

"Congratulations to the CARE Awards Gold winners combining exceptional craftsmanship with environmental sustainability," says Cam Hayward, Chair of the 2013 CARE Awards. "All of these projects demonstrate the range of possibilities for today's consumers considering a new home or renovation."

Other multiple Gold winners include Zebra Design, Città Group, BTH Construction Ltd., Method Built Homes, Christopher Developments Inc., Terry Johal Developments Ltd., GT Mann Contracting Ltd., Maximilian Huxley Construction Ltd., Falcon Heights Contracting, and Coastal Construction.

Green Builder of the Year - Large Volume was awarded to Limona Construction Ltd. and Green Builder of the Year - Small Volume was won by BTH Construction Ltd. Lifetime Achievement Award went to Bob Harris, R.N. Harris Homes Ltd. for many contributions to the industry including expertise in energy efficient and sustainable housing. Best Heritage Project was awarded to Princess Avenue by Mike Graham Construction Ltd. for preserving Victoria's architecture and craftsmanship. VHBA President Wilf Gorter won the Building Better Futures Community Award for leadership promoting professionalism, interests of consumers, and housing affordability.

The Herman Rebneris Student Carpentry Award was presented this year to two students - Patricia Marx and Quinn Mottershead. A new Student Design Award to recognize the importance of residential design went to Vanessa Lloyd. Each student receives $500 to further their education.

The Gold winners are, in the opinion of the judges, the very best projects incorporating specific criteria including unique design, function, creative use of space, compatibility with the environment, energy efficiency, effective land use, and cost.
