Volleyball Canada receives Government of Canada funding to host 2014 World Championship Qualification Tournament


MISSISSAUGA, ONTARIO--(Marketwired - May 19, 2014) - Department of Canadian Heritage

The Honourable Bal Gosal, Minister of State (Sport), announced that the Government of Canada provided Volleyball Canada with $50,000 through Sport Canada's Hosting Program to support the hosting of this week's 2014 World Championship Qualification Tournament for both the men's and women's teams in the North, Central America and Caribbean Volleyball Confederation (NORCECA).

The event was held in Mississauga, Ontario, from May 16 to 19, 2014.

Quick Facts

  • The Government of Canada contributed $1.93 million to Volleyball Canada in 2013-14 through Sport Canada's Sport Support Program.
  • In 2013-14, approximately $820,000 was provided through the Athlete Assistance Program to support 106 male and female (indoor) volleyball athletes with living, training, tuition and special needs expenses.
  • Volleyball Canada is the national governing body for the sport of volleyball in Canada. It works closely with provincial and territorial federations and local clubs to foster the growth and development of volleyball in Canada.
  • The top-four men's teams and top-five women's teams from the NORCECA region will go on to compete at the 2014 FIVB Volleyball World Championships to be held in Poland (men) and Italy (women) next September and October, respectively.
