2015 Taiwan Open of Surfing Upgrades

TAITUNG,TAIWAN--(Marketwired - Nov 23, 2015) - Jinzun Harbor, situated in the picturesque Taitung County along Taiwan's eastern coast, is rated one of the best spots for surfing by the World Surf League (WSL), along with shores in the United States, Australia, Japan, Malaysia and Thailand. It is also the only venue in Taiwan for international surfing tournaments.

The 2015 Taiwan Open of Surfing, scheduled in Nov.26-29 in Jinzhu, will be elevated to WSL QS 1500 level (equivalent to three-star in the previous system) to attract more world professional wave riders.

Over 130 surfers from Australia, Japan, Hawaii, England, France, Brazil, Peru and Taiwan will compete in the championship which offers a combined cash prize of 2 million Taiwan dollars (about 62,500 US).

Among the competitors are American Taylor Jenson and Austrian Harley Ingleby, both two-time world longboard champions, and 2014 world longboard winner Chelsea Williams. Others world-class surfers include Hawaiian longboard goddess Crystal Dzigas, JPSA top surfer Takumi Nakamura, Kai Hing and Nic Jones.

This is the fifth annual Taiwan Open of Surfing, hosted by Taitung County Government to promote the sports as well as tourism, taking advantage of the special monsoon waves in Jinzun and the unique indigenous culture in Taitung.
