20th Annual Walk for Warmth Raises Over $142,000 for Utility Assistance

Donations Still Needed to Help Heat Homes in Oakland and Livingston Counties

PONTIAC, MI--(Marketwire - February 18, 2010) -  Oakland Livingston Human Service Agency (OLHSA) announced today that over $142,000 has been raised to date for the 20th Anniversary Walk for Warmth. In 2009, Walk for Warmth raised close to $160,000. OLHSA is striving to surpass that amount and reach its $200,000 goal for the Walk's 20th anniversary.

"Setting such a lofty goal amidst an uncertain economy was a bold move on our part," said Ronald B. Borngesser, CEO of OLHSA. "But with this troubled economic climate, the need for utility assistance is greater than ever. We are meeting that need with unprecedented determination, and we are seeking continued support from the community for that purpose."

It's not too late to donate! In order to reach its $200,000 goal, OLHSA is continuing to accept donations. 100 percent of proceeds go directly to the Utility Assistance Program to help residents facing heating emergencies.

February 7 at the Palace of Auburn Hills, the Oakland County Walk for Warmth welcomed over 1000 walkers who collectively donated over $25,000. Walkers were lead by the bagpipe group Southeast Michigan Pipes and Drums, enjoyed live entertainment and shot hoops on the Pistons court. Children played games and won prizes in the Kiddie Court, sponsored by Genisys Credit Union.

On February 13, over 300 walkers gathered for the Livingston County Walk for Warmth at Hartland Education Support Service Center. Though smaller in size, the event brought in over $39,000 from walker donations. Buzz Elliott from WHMI was the emcee, and walkers Jazzercised and enjoyed face painting and DJ music.

Both events hosted Green vendors who educated walkers about energy efficiency and living green in order to help reduce energy bills.

Sponsorship dollars, monies donated by walkers, and additional private donations make up the $142,000 raised thus far. To donate visit www.olhsa.org/walk4warmth or call 248.209.2621.

Walk for Warmth is sponsored by Genisys Credit Union and Palace Sports and Entertainment.
