325 young women converge in Winnipeg today for the opening of the RebELLEs Pan-Canadian Young Feminist Gathering

WINNIPEG, MANITOBA--(Marketwire - May 20, 2011) - Over 325 young feminists from across Canada and Québec will gather in Winnipeg from May 20-23, 2011 for the Second RebELLEs Pan-Canadian Young Feminist Gathering.

Under the title Notre Révolution Féministe, Our Revolution is Now, the Gathering will build on the foundation laid at the first RebELLEs Gathering which drew hundreds of participants to Montréal, QC in 2008. The RebELLEs Movement is a nationwide network of feminist collectives and young feminists working to defend women's rights and to coordinate actions to fight sexism, patriarchy, colonialism and capitalism.

"We want to make it clear that feminism is alive and kicking. With the recent attacks on reproductive rights in Canada and the election of a majority conservative government, the feminist movement is more relevant than ever," said Jodi Proctor, spokeswoman. The gathering will give young feminists an opportunity to discuss the current Canadian political context. "We will unite to re-build the feminist movement and take effective action against anti-women and anti-feminist policies."

Participants at the bilingual, accessible event will create and adopt their political platform composed of demands and alternatives during a series of workshops and plenary sessions, focusing on five action areas: Violence against Women, Anti-Racism and Decolonization, Poverty and Anti-Capitalism, Women and the Environment, and Peace and Demilitarization. Other workshops will include Introduction to Feminism, Radical Cheerleading, and Reproductive Justice.

"The RebELLEs gathering will lead participants and our movement to new strategies to resist right-wing ideologies and combat patriarchy and other forms of oppression," said Jodie Layne, spokeswoman.

Participants will have the opportunity to discuss the oppressions faced by young women. The RebELLEs Gathering aims to empower young women and girls, to mobilize, energize, and develop leadership skills to collectively work to improve women's lives.

"We will lay the foundation to move a step forward as the RebELLEs movement, to become a political actor on the national scene. We will identify priorities for campaigns and strategies to take action at the local, provincial and national levels for the next 3 years." said Ms. Proctor.
