3TIER Environmental Forecast Group Unveils Advanced Riverflow Forecasting for Columbia River

Forecasts Could Provide Millions of Dollars of Benefits

SEATTLE, WA -- (MARKET WIRE) -- October 6, 2005 -- Seattle-based 3TIER Environmental Forecast Group announced today the introduction of their newest long-term forecast product designed specifically for continental-scale river systems. The product is based on a system that integrates many recently developed technologies to create probabilistic forecasts of river flow months in advance. These modeling systems account for small-scale processes, including regional variations in snow-pack, soil moisture and precipitation. The first deployment of the system will be on the Columbia River in the Pacific Northwest. This comprehensive new product offers decision makers an unsurpassed outlook of future water supplies in the Columbia River Basin and is being offered at an extremely competitive price point.

"The Columbia River system is an excellent application for these advanced modeling and forecasting technologies, because it is one of the most critical natural resources we have here in the Pacific Northwest," stated Dr. Bart Nijssen, Director of Research, Development and Deployment at 3TIER Group. "Year-to-year hydrologic variability within that river system has a large impact on the regional power market, as well as other economic interests -- from irrigation to salmon. 3TIER's product is specifically designed for the intricacies of larger watersheds, and this information will allow energy decision makers in the Northwest region to get the most benefit from this increasingly-relied-upon resource."

With a combined hydroelectric generation potential exceeding 22,000 MW, the power produced along the Colombia is exported throughout the entire Western United States, typically generating over half the region's electricity. The 3TIER Group long-range streamflow forecast system will provide regular, weekly updates of expected monthly flows at various points on the Columbia system, with individual forecasts extending out as far as one year into the future.
