4G Americas Elects Shaw Communications to Its Board of Governors

BELLEVUE, WA--(Marketwire - November 8, 2010) -  4G Americas, a wireless industry trade association representing the 3GPP family of technologies throughout the Americas region, today announced the election of Shaw Communications to its Board of Governors. Shaw is a diversified communications company that provides broadband cable television, High-Speed Internet, Digital Phone, telecommunications services and satellite direct-to-home services and is currently building a mobile broadband network that will cover most of Western Canada.

Chris Pearson, President of 4G Americas, welcomed Shaw's election to the 4G Americas Board and commented, "Shaw is representative of both the momentum of convergence in communications and the exciting new entrants in mobile communications. We welcome the strategic insight Shaw will contribute as they build out a full suite of wireless services in Western Canada with HSPA and LTE."

The GSM-HSPA family of technologies is the wireless market leader in the Americas region, and worldwide, with 4.7 billion global connections on over 800 mobile GSM-HSPA networks in 219 countries (subscriber data from Informa Telecoms & Media). 3G technology growth continues with nearly 700 million UMTS-HSPA subscriptions projected worldwide by year-end 2010. Facilitated by organizations such as 4G Americas, the 3GPP family of technologies has grown in every aspect in the Western Hemisphere, including number of subscribers, 3G evolution deployments, data revenue, variety of devices, number of networks, and the scope and depth of the technology ecosystem. The U.S. is now the leading nation for the uptake of mobile broadband services, and Latin America is the second ranked region of the world in terms of wireless growth. Future success is well indicated by leading operators, including Greenfield and CDMA operators, who have already committed to deploying Long Term Evolution (LTE).

"Shaw Communications is pleased to participate on 4G Americas' Board of Governors and lend its expertise and insights in support of the GSM technology family and its successful growth in the Americas region, including its evolution to LTE and beyond," said Michael D'Avella, Senior Vice President, Planning, for Shaw Communications, Inc.
