4th District Congressional Candidate Utah Rep. Stephen Sandstrom Comments on Legislative Decision to Hold Off on E-Verify Bill

SALT LAKE CITY, UT--(Marketwire - Feb 29, 2012) - Utah Rep. Stephen Sandstrom gave his reaction today to the legislature's decision to hold off on moving immigration bills forward during the 2012 session.

Rep. Sandstrom is a leading proponent of immigration reform and sponsor of Utah's E-Verify bill, legislation that would have prohibited illegal hiring practices by Utah businesses. The bill, which had support within the business and agricultural communities as well as from Governor Herbert, would have suspended business licenses of companies that violated the law.

Rep. Sandstrom called for continued commitment from Utahns to achieve prudent immigration reform at the state and federal levels.

"Although I am disappointed that E-Verify won't be heard this session, I have the utmost respect for the body and legislative process. I can understand the hesitation of making the 2012 session all about immigration because there are so many important issues which need to be addressed this year," said Rep. Sandstrom. "However, the illegal immigration problem isn't going away. It will continue to plague this country until our federal delegates tackle the problem and stop playing politics."

In support of Sandstrom's efforts on E-Verify, Wesley Smith, the executive vice president of government affairs at the Salt Lake Chamber, added: "Throughout this session we have had productive conversations with Rep. Sandstrom about E-Verify. The business community appreciates his good faith efforts to strengthen enforcement of immigration laws."

Illegal immigration and putting in place smart reform at the federal level will continue to be a priority for Rep. Sandstrom if elected to represent the 4th District.

Rep. Sandstrom continued, "Meaningful immigration reform as well as a simplification of today's unwieldy tax code, balancing the budget, and reducing the size of federal government are all issues which will require courageous leadership and continued commitment, which is exactly what I hope to bring to Washington, D.C. next year as Utah's next Congressman."
