$5 Million Gift to Fraser Institute Launches Peter Munk Centre for Free Enterprise Education

TORONTO, ON--(Marketwired - June 09, 2016) - Peter M. Brown, chairman of the Fraser Institute, and Niels Veldhuis, Fraser Institute president, today announced that Peter Munk is donating $5 million to launch The Peter Munk Centre for Free Enterprise Education at the Fraser Institute.

The Fraser Institute has long provided educational programs for high school and university students, teachers and journalists. Historically most of these seminars have been carried out in Western Canada.

The creation of The Peter Munk Centre for Free Enterprise Education will allow the Fraser Institute to replicate the tremendous success of its education programs in Central Canada, with a particular focus on Ontario.

"Peter Munk's extraordinary vision and generosity will help educate the next generation of Ontarians about economic freedom, the relationship between individuals and their representative governments, and the role of choice and competition in driving economic and social progress," said Mr. Brown.

The gift funds a new Centre that, once fully operational, will annually provide more than 20 new programs including Economics for Journalists, Workshops for High School Teachers, University and College Seminars to Explore Economics and Public Policy, High School Seminars to Discover Economics and a Student Leaders Colloquium for students who display a true passion for government policy and economics. The Centre also includes an expansion of the Fraser Institute's Internship Program.

"The Fraser Institute is Canada's leading think-tank and one of the most influential in the world. It continues to play a critical role in improving the quality of life for Canadians," said Peter Munk. "I am very pleased to support this great Canadian institution and the creation of the new Centre. I hope this gift inspires others to support the Fraser Institute in a material way."

"We are greatly appreciative of Peter Munk's longtime support of the Fraser Institute. This new Centre will impact thousands of future opinion leaders who will go on to occupy key roles in business, law, journalism, politics and academia," said Mr. Veldhuis.
