LONDON, UNITED KINGDOM--(Marketwired - Oct 3, 2016) - In 'The Next Chapter' of a compelling Grosvenor House story, the £8.0 million public space project directed by Hirsch Bedner Associates (HBA) celebrates the hotel's rich history and enhances its "sense of place" in terms of both location and heritage.
Grosvenor House's London City Centre location and magnificent setting open up to views of Hyde Park and infuse the design with delightful references to the natural world outside. Now, no other London hotel has such an immediate relationship with the city's most famous Royal Park. Grosvenor House has become, in effect, a grand promenade from the fashionable streets of Mayfair to the vast green expanse of Hyde Park.
The new Park Room is animated with references to Hyde Park, including a selection of glass butterflies that form the central chandelier. These are combined with books and various ornaments that hint at scandalous doings past and present. The Park Room also showcases the glory days when Grosvenor House's de Havilland propeller aeroplane won the most spectacular air race from England to Australia in 1937 and debutantes danced at Queen Charlotte's Ball in The Great Room.
Grosvenor House is a luxurious, Central London location to enjoy the quintessentially British tradition of Afternoon Tea as well as a la carte options and a creative cocktail and champagne menu. The Park Room has been opened to become the social hub of Grosvenor House - a large and sophisticated lounge transitioning from morning to afternoon and evening. The room now flows effortlessly through a large fireplace that connects to the adjacent Gallery promenade that leads from Park Street to Park Lane.
The new design of The Park Room is graceful and refined. It has maintained the historic luxury and grandeur of the hotel whilst infusing a more stylish, contemporary British feel. On the floor, pale oak is laid in herringbone fashion and combined with a hand-tufted rug that has been custom-designed to suggest reflections of leaves caught in watery sunshine. The colour palette is fresh and belongs to the park - sharp greens, greys and cream predominate. The bar and tables as well as the central patisserie display table are topped in Damasco White marble, an elegant green-veined marble, while deep buttoning, not only to the upholstered sofas and chairs but to the fabric covered walls, confer a luxuriant and intimate feel.
The ground floor transformation is apparent from the moment guests arrive through the main entrance on Park Street. The most significant change is a bespoke floor to ceiling glass surround fire place, the warm flames drawing guests in and the spectacular transparent frame capturing the next stage of the ground floor and the vista of the park beyond.
A pale crema marfil marble floor with brass inlaid detailing conveys contemporary glamour, the reception desks have a mirrored glass façade and walls are clad in rich fabric. Antiqued mirror to the columns and ceiling reflects light and movement. The lobby design in particular plays with the theatrical history of the hotel - the days of the famous Grosvenor House Girls - with abstracted feather motifs in the carpet and a staggered backdrop to the reception desks which suggests the wings of a theatre stage.
The Ballroom is inspired by the ice skating rink that Her Majesty The Queen once learnt to skate on in The Great Room. The carpet for this room has grooves cut through like the swirls of an ice rink. Together with the Ballroom, 86 Park Lane has been refurbished to create Mayfair's newest meeting and events space, offering twenty flexible suites.
"We are delighted to take Grosvenor House, A JW Marriott Hotel to the next chapter in her esteemed history. The refurbishment of the Lobby, Park Room and Ballroom show case some of London's finest entertainment space. We have fused our heritage and location to create a contemporary hotel that satisfies the global traveller of today," says Stuart Bowery, General Manager at Grosvenor House, A JW Marriott Hotel.
Grosvenor House has commanded its position on Park Lane since opening its doors in 1929. Steeped in a rich and fascinating history, historical features such as original Lutyens wrought iron gates and the iconic Great Room, once an ice-skating rink, have welcomed guests for over 85 years. It's British style and elegance has long been associated with Royalty, international dignitaries and celebrities from the worlds of film, music and sports.
Grosvenor House guests can enjoy an incredible location in the very heart of Mayfair to explore all that London has to offer. Luxury shopping districts of Mount Street, Bond Street and Knightsbridge are a short walk away, with many cultural art galleries, museums, theatres and royal sites such as Buckingham Palace, Kensington Palace and the Royal Albert Hall within walking distance or a short taxi ride.
