5 to Watch Awards to Recognize Emerging Leaders in Canadian Sports Business

TORONTO, ONTARIO--(Marketwired - April 14, 2014) - Canada's foremost sports business, events and marketing professionals will honour the next generation of leaders in the sports industry at the highly anticipated 5 To Watch - Canada's Sport Business Awards.

Taking place May 1, 2014 at George Brown College's Waterfront Campus, the 3rd annual 5 to Watch Awards will be hosted by Kate Beirness of TSN's Sports Centre. Launched to benefit current and future students by raising funds for bursaries, the awards recognizes five emerging Canadian sports business leaders under the age of 40. The awards are given annually to professionals who demonstrate leadership in their industry sector while exhibiting commitment to philanthropy and volunteerism.

"With the 5 to Watch Awards, George Brown College continues to provide an important opportunity to cultivate the talent of our next generation of leaders," said Justine Fedak, Honorary Co-Chair of the selection committee and Senior V.P. Brand Advertising and Sponsorships at BMO Financial Group. "I'm proud of what the school and its partners have achieved - both in honouring these exceptional professionals, and in working together to raise funds for students wanting to make their mark on the industry in the future."

George Brown College is expected to receive a minimum of $25,000 towards student bursaries. To date, the event has raised $67, 000 and has awarded 10 bursaries.

"We are proud to be part of an event that not only celebrates rising sports business leaders, but also supports those following in their footsteps," said Maureen Loweth, Dean, Centre for Business, George Brown College. "The bursaries will ensure that we continue to attract and educate students interested in pursuing careers in sport and event marketing."

The awards will be voted on by a panel of leading sports and events marketers and influencers, including representation from Founding Partners: BMO Financial Group, the Canadian Football League, Maple Leaf Sports & Entertainment, SDI Marketing, TSN and presenting partner, The Globe and Mail. The awards are presented by George Brown College and a committee of Centre for Business sport and event marketing alumni in partnership with The Globe and Mail.

Among the keynote speakers at the awards are:

Susan Cohig - a highly respected business leader and the NHL's Senior Vice President, Business Affairs & Integrated Marketing. Cohig was named a 2014 Marketing Hall of Femme honoree by Direct Marketing News. In 2013, she was acknowledged as a "Game Changer - Women in Sports Business" by Sports Business Journal, which recognizes the contributions of women to the success of the industry; and as one of Globe and Mail's "Power 50" List of Canadian Sports Figures in 2013.

Heather Moyse - a dual national sport athlete in bobsleigh and rugby and a two-time Olympic gold medalist. In 2001, Moyse was selected to serve as a Disability Sports Program Officer with Commonwealth Games Canada in Trinidad and Tobago. She developed and established a camp for children who are deaf or hearing-impaired from islands across the Caribbean called Camp ABLE (Active Bodies, Leadership, and Esteem). She currently serves as a Member-at-Large for Commonwealth Games Canada.

Peter Montopoli - a business trailblazer and the General Secretary of the Canadian Soccer Association. He is the CEO of the FIFA Women's World Cup™ Canada 2015 and was appointed General Coordinator for host city Rustenburg at the 2010 FIFA World Cup South Africa™.

Michael Landsberg - a sports journalist and host of TSN's Off the Record. Always trying to see the world of sports through the fans' eyes, Landsberg asks his guests tough, thought-provoking and challenging questions on the day's hottest sports topics.
