5 Years of dmexco: Turning Visions Into Reality

COLOGNE, FRANCE--(Marketwired - Sep 19, 2013) - From an innovative concept in 2009 to the largest and most high-calibre exposition of the global digital industry that has ever been staged: The motto "Turning Visions into Reality" has never been more fitting than in the fifth year of the dmexco! This was clearly noticeable already on the first day: With a record number of 742 exhibitors from all over the globe, the largest amount of exhibition space since the beginning of the digital industry and over 450 top speakers at international C-level in the Conference, the dmexco 2013 made a clear statement that once again underlines its status as the global brand for effective knowledge transfer and direct business transactions.

Starting from today, Cologne is going to be the hub of the digital world for two days: All important themes, trends and leaders of the global digital industry will meet up at the dmexco 2013. As the worldwide unique combination between an expo and a conference, it is the hotspot of the international digital industry. This is confirmed by the participation of 742 exhibitors and 450 top speakers from home and abroad here at the dmexco, which represents a total annual advertising turnover of 120 billion US dollars. Alone today's two keynote speakers Marc Pritchard (Procter & Gamble) and Keith Weed (Unilever) are responsible for annual advertising spending totalling approx. 18 billion US dollars. In Germany, a total of 7.23 billion Euro will be spent on online advertising in 2013. This figure was presented by the Circle of Online Marketers (OVK) in the Federal Association of the Digital Industry (BVDW) e.V. in the new "Online Report 2013/2", which was published for the first time here at the dmexco. According to the forecasts, the German online advertising market will grow by 12 percent in 2013 compared to last year. "The growing relevance of digital advertising is also on-going in 2013. This clearly underlines the fact that the advertising industry is increasingly adapting in line with the digital media usage of the consumers," stated Paul Mudter, Chairman of the OVK. The "OVK Online Report 2013/2" can be downloaded immediately at free of charge.

In line with this year's motto "Turning Visions into Reality", in its fifth jubilee year the dmexco has experienced a growth rate of over 150 percent compared to the premiere in 2009 at the Koelnmesse. Spread over more than 600,000 sq ft of exhibition space, exhibitors from 26 countries are presenting their products, brands and visions at the largest and most high-calibre exposition of the global digital industry and they include among others Adobe, Amazon, AOL, AppNexus, Axel Springer, Baidu, Bertelsmann, Deutsche Post, Ebay, Exact Target (Salesforce), Facebook, Google, IBM, Microsoft, PayPal, Rakuten, SAP, Spotify, Telefónica, Telekom, Yahoo! and Yandex. The expo particularly expanded in the eCommerce (+20 percent) and mobile (+45 percent) sectors in 2013. Lying at around 25 percent, the share of international exhibitors is higher than ever before. Primarily the USA, Israel, France, Swiss and Austria are strongly represented this year. However, important exhibitors from India, Japan, Malaysia, Uruguay, the United Arab Emirates, China, Russia and Canada have also recognised the significance of the dmexco for their worldwide business and are represented here in Cologne.

Furthermore, the decision-making elite of the global industry is discussing the current opportunities and challenges of the digital world in the five programme formats of the dmexco Conference, which boasts a top line-up of speakers. Impressive personalities will be enfolding completely new potential for the international digital industry today and tomorrow in a programme lasting over 190 hours. This first-class programme includes among other things the keynotes of the top decision-makers of leading brands such as Procter & Gamble and Unilever, but also exciting insights from Amazon, AOL, Bertelsmann, Electronic Arts, Facebook, Google, Handelsblatt, Havas, Luma Partners, Twitter and Yahoo!. The new concept of the "World of Experience" that serves to present digital visions in tangible formats, formed a further highlight of today's conference at the dmexco 2013.

"The size of dmexco is really amazing. If you look back, the fact that the dmexco has doubled in size over the course of four years is a big telling sign. People are smart and they follow where the information and the trends are. dmexco is a pretty remarkable event," was how Tim Armstrong (AOL), who also attended the premiere in 2009, summed up the successful development of the dmexco. For Julia Jäkel (Gruner + Jahr) this year's motto plays an important role in the success of the dmexco: "Turning Visions into Reality is an incredible motivation for me. It motivates me to establish creative and sustainable business models on the basis of one's own content competence." Thomas Hesse (Bertelsmann) also considered today's dmexco as "a wonderful opportunity to turn visions into reality." As one of the first companies to participate in the "World of Experience", Philips already took advantage of this opportunity to present its "advanced and connected consumer products" in its own world of experience.

Christian Muche and Frank Schneider, dmexco Board of Directors: "The significance of the dmexco extends far beyond the borders of the marketing industry; in the meantime it has a sustainable influence on the future themes of the overall economy. Our aim is to meet the demands of the market in every respect and to present new themes, formats and brands in our role as trendsetter of the global digital industry. We personally carry out the permanent exchange with the market participants that is necessary to achieve this aim."
