6Sight Future of Imaging Conference Examines New Ways of Monetizing Pictures in the 21st Century

Three Key Trends Driving Explosive Growth of User-Generated Videos, Photos, Visual Blogs and Wikis

SAN MATEO, CA -- (MARKET WIRE) -- October 16, 2006 -- Any doubts about the value of user-generated visual content, including photos, videos, and image-rich podcasts, blogs and wikis, were all but obliterated with last week's announcement that Google will pay $1.65 Billion for the video-sharing site YouTube. The upcoming 6Sight® Future of Imaging conference ( held in Monterey, Calif. on October 24 and 25 will spotlight innovative companies developing new business models to serve content creators and content consumers, and make money in the process. The first is the democratization of media production through new technologies that are accessible and affordable: Digital camcorders, digital cameras that have the ability to capture video as well as pictures, and camera-phones with image and video capture capabilities. The flood of easy-to-use visual communication tools is helping to propel a flood of user-generated content.

The second factor is the rise of social networking. Social networking sites like MySpace, Facebook, Bebo, Classmates, Flickr, Friendster, hi5, Orkut, CyWorld, and YouTube generate literally tens of billions of page views a month. It's no coincidence that the leading video-sharing sites such as MySpace and YouTube are also among the leading social networking sites. The demographics are key: Currently, two-thirds of frequent social networking users are younger than 24.

The third factor fuelling the explosion of user-generated content is that people, particularly internet-savvy young people, are no longer content to be passive consumers of content. They don't necessarily trust the advertising-dependent, corporate conglomerate mainstream media to tell the whole story or even tell the real story (AKA truth) about what's going on. They don't even trust the major studios to do the right thing with a story -- witness the additional shooting for "Snakes On A Plane" ordered by New Line Cinema to satisfy the blogosphere. They have something to say or something to show about nearly any topic from current events to special interests and hobbies to their own daily lives.
