80 Ontario students receive a $3,000 WPC millennium scholarship

TORONTO, ONTARIO--(CCNMatthews - Nov. 18, 2005) - 80 Ontario students will receive $3,000 World Petroleum Council (WPC) millennium scholarships for the 2005-06 academic year. WPC millennium scholarships are awarded annually to students who excel academically and are enrolled in post-secondary programs related to the petroleum industry.

Some 200 Canadian students are receiving WPC millennium scholarships this year. In Ontario, the awards went to students from 13 post-secondary institutions, including Carleton, Guelph, McMaster, Ottawa, Queen's, Toronto, Trent, Waterloo, Western, Wilfrid Laurier, Nipissing, Brock and Ryerson.

"Thanks to the WPC millennium scholarship, the Canada Millennium Scholarship Foundation is able to support talented students as well as set a good example for private and public sector partnerships," said Norman Riddell, the Foundation's executive director and CEO. "Furthermore, the program gives students a chance to forge links with companies in the petroleum industry."

The WPC millennium scholarship was created four years ago through a $4.2-million endowment from the Canadian Association of the WPC. The Canada Millennium Scholarship Foundation manages the program, which provides support to students nominated by 48 post-secondary institutions and links them to employment opportunities. By 2009, WPC scholarships will have helped finance the educations of 1,600 petroleum industry professionals.

"The program supports the education and development of the next generation of energy professionals," added David Boone, president of the WPC Canadian Association. "At the recent World Petroleum Congress in Johannesburg, South Africa, it was clear that the demand from the global energy sector for the best and brightest minds will continue to grow and that demand will be particularly strong in Canada."

In addition to studying in a field related to the petroleum industry - chemical or petroleum engineering, environmental sciences, international business management, geology or geophysics - and maintaining good grades, award recipients must also be full-time students at a participating post-secondary institution who have already obtained a millennium bursary.

The Canada Millennium Scholarship Foundation is a private, independent organization created by an act of Parliament in 1998. It encourages Canadian students to strive for excellence and pursue their post-secondary studies. The Foundation distributes $340 million in bursaries and scholarships each year throughout Canada. Since its inception, it has awarded more than $1.7 billion in the form of over 550,000 bursaries and scholarships to Canadian post-secondary students.
