81 Percent of Moms Say They're Cutting Back on Holiday Spending

Respondents in Survey Say Impact of Deep Recession Will Be Lasting for Their Families, as Many Are Driven Back to Work or Out of Work

SAN FRANCISCO, CA--(Marketwire - December 15, 2009) -, an online media destination by Lifetime Digital offering a diverse mom community for discussing the experiences of modern day motherhood, today said moms who responded to a recent online survey expect the recession to have a sharp impact on holiday spending and a lasting impact on their families that will extend far beyond the new year.

Of 500 moms surveyed, almost 81 percent say their families will be spending less this holiday season than they did a year ago. More than 68 percent say they will be spending less on gifts for their children and 54 percent will be putting aside less for charitable giving. Moms say holiday travel plans are also being scaled back. Nearly 60 percent say they will be traveling less this holiday season compared to last year. Crazy airports, packed planes and jammed freeways are making many people reconsider their holiday travel plans in efforts to cut back on spending.

"The majority of items purchased in the home today are decided by mom. By reaching out to our community of mothers at MothersClick, we were able to get a better understanding of how the recession would influence spending this holiday season," said Andra Davidson, MothersClick, Editor-in-Chief. "From the results, it's clear that the recession will not only have a heavy impact on gift-giving, but will also affect everything from travel to balancing work and home."

Today's economic state has also had interesting effects on the average amount of hours spent in the workplace. More than 1 in 4 moms have been stay at home moms, but are now looking to go back to work. And 31 percent have reported that their husbands are working more hours or have taken a second job.

Kristin Thompson, mom blogger and survey participant, noted, "I've found the biggest fear in the home today is job security. That insecure feeling that you may not be able to find a job to care for their family, especially in a one-income home, is daunting and widespread amongst moms today."

The recession has had a significant impact on families in the near term, but what will the implications be in the future? More than 30 percent of moms say the recession has had a negative effect on their family and 24 percent believe there will be a lasting impact in the long term.
