85th Miramichi Exhibition Opens With Midway, Agriculture-And New Video Game Competition

MIRAMICHI, NEW BRUNSWICK--(Marketwire - July 14, 2008) - In the spirit of creating new community traditions, the Miramichi Exhibition will open in Miramichi, New Brunswick from July 16 - 20, 2008 with some modern updates alongside the midway rides and agricultural competitions that are the heart of the Exhibition's 85-year history.

Video Gaming at the Ex: Lansomnia

This year's fair will also host Lansomnia 2008, a recreational and competitive video game tournament. The result of a partnership between the Miramichi Agricultural Exhibition Association and Lansomnia, a not-for-profit organization based in Saint John, this milestone event expects to draw more than 250 competitive gamers from across the Maritimes competing for more than $10,000 in cash and prizes. All event proceeds will be donated to IWK Health Centre in Halifax.

"Tradition is a big part of fostering a community and the Miramichi Exhibition has always brought people together," says John Trevors of the MAEA. "Events like Lansomnia will create new traditions."

Also at Lansomnia and the Exhibition:

- "Rock the 'Chi" - A "battle of the bands" contest with the hit video game, Rock Band

- "Play the Pros" - Gamers see how they stack up against the country's best

- Tournament action on the big screen with play-by-play

- Fairgoers can "pay as you play" on a variety of games and platforms

New Favourites and Old Traditions

Old favourites at the Exhibition include more than 30 midway attractions, the 4-H Club agriculture competition and the petting zoo. The young at heart should visit the Red Rooster Casino, find deals at the flea market and laugh with comedian and entertainer Jimmy Flynn. Thirsty fairgoers can enjoy the Moosehead beer tent, another Exhibition first.

Admission to the Miramichi Exhibition is free; unlimited-ride bracelets can be purchased in advance for $22.
