A 10-Point Plan for a Summer Move!

Canadian Association of Movers: CAM helps consumers have a smooth summer move Attention: City Editor, Home/Garden Editor, Lifestyle Editor, News Editor, Transportation Editor MISSISSAUGA/ONTARIO/CHOOSING A MOVER--(CCNMatthews - May 31, 2006) - The summer is the period of peak demand for moving companies. Book early to get the mover you want.

Here are ten points to help you get a good move:

DOs
1. Find a reputable mover (check with your provincial government, the Better Business Bureau and/or the Canadian Association of Movers)
2. If possible, use a "Certified Canadian Mover"
3. Get three on-site estimates - IN WRITING - and validate any estimate that is significantly different from the others
4. Read Industry Canada's "Consumer Checklist for Choosing a Moving Company".
5. Ask how your goods are protected against damage and covered while in transit.

DON'Ts
1. Make your decision based on the mover's advertisement or salesman's promises
2. Make your decision based on the lowest price or the company waiving the GST
3. Allow any company to do an over-the-phone estimate
4. Accept the references a company provides at face value
5. Accept any verbal agreement

You have a responsibility to protect yourself and you should find out about your rights and responsibilities. There are consumer protection laws to protect you, but it's far easier to get a reputable supplier than to try and get a remedy after the move.

Professional movers assist their customers to prepare for their moves, ensure their goods are protected and do the jobs as agreed.
