A Pleasurably Puzzling Experience

You've Got to Complete to EAT!

NEW YORK, NY -- (MARKET WIRE) -- August 17, 2005 -- Ever puzzled over the dazzling choice of European delicacies in your local specialty food store? Always wanted to learn more about them? Well, now here's your chance to finally solve the puzzle with the "European Authentic Tastes" (EAT) program. A custom crossword has been created, themed around educating readers on European Union (EU) "Designation of Quality" foods, such as naturally golden Isigny butter from France, cold-smoked, lean Speck Alto Adige from Italy, and full-flavored, spicy Esrom cheese from Denmark, to name just a few of the hundreds of fine products available.

Consumers have two ways of completing the puzzle: online at or via the New York Times:

Readers of the New York Times who are up to the challenge will have four chances to complete EAT's crossword, which will appear in the following sections of the New York Times on the dates indicated below:

--  November 6th, 2005:  T - Living
--  November 20th, 2005:  T - Travel
Another way of entering is by completing the crossword on-line, where visitors can search for answers and discover more about EAT products at: While you're on-line, enter a sweepstakes for a chance to win one of three fabulous gift baskets (worth $500, $250 and $100 respectively) chock full of EAT goodies. Before you know it, you will be dazzling your taste buds with delicious treats such as Mel do Alentejo (honey) from Portugal and Stilton cheese from England, while washing it down with a refreshing Framboise-Lambic beer from Belgium!

"Readers will not only have a fun time testing their knowledge of fine, gourmet European foods while completing the crossword, but are sure to learn a lot more about them too," says Ari Weinzweig, owner of Zingerman's Delicatessen in Ann Arbor, Michigan. "Every one of the products in this program has a great story behind it, so there's a lot of fun to be had in learning all about them and, of course, they taste great as well," Weinzweig added.

Designed to protect and promote hundreds of traditional foods from all over Europe, the EU's "Designation of Quality" system is easily recognizable: products with a "Designation of Quality" status bear blue-and-yellow "sun" logos enclosing the EU stars and a graphic representation of the furrows. With 25 member countries and more than 700 registered foods, the EU offers quite an amazing choice of delicacies, which will continue to grow as foods from the newer member states are added. Many of the products can be found in specialty food stores and supermarkets across the country.
